Objective: The purpose of this study was to (a) identify the prevalence and barriers of self-reported service needs in a military sample with and without traumatic brain injury (TBI), (b) evaluate the influence of the number of service needs on overall neurobehavioral functioning, and (c) examine the longitudinal trajectories of service needs over time.

Method: Participants were 941 U.S.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers aim to extend human healthspans by keeping cells functional and non-senescent, as aging appears to be genetically regulated in model organisms.
  • A new human genetic disease linked to GIMAP5 deficiency leads to cell senescence, liver and immune dysfunction, and early death, highlighting GIMAP5's importance in longevity.
  • GIMAP5 helps regulate the accumulation of harmful long-chain ceramides by interacting with a protein kinase (CK2), and targeting CK2 can restore function in GIMAP5-deficient cells, showing its role in maintaining immune health and longevity.

The purpose of this study was to extend previous research by examining the relationship between lifetime blast exposure and neurobehavioral functioning after mild TBI (MTBI) by (a) using a comprehensive measure of lifetime blast exposure, and (b) controlling for the influence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants were 103 United States service members and veterans (SMVs) with a medically documented diagnosis of MTBI, recruited from three military treatment facilities (74.8%) and community-based recruitment initiatives (25.

Purpose: To examine change in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) during the COVID-19 pandemic in caregivers of service members/veterans (SMVs) with traumatic brain injury (TBI), by comparing HRQOL during the first year of the pandemic to HRQOL 12 months pre-pandemic.

Methods: Caregivers (N = 246) were classified into three COVID-19 Pandemic Impact groups based on impact ratings of the pandemic on HRQOL: No Impact (n = 50), Mild Impact (n = 117), and Moderate-Severe Impact (n = 79). Caregivers completed 19 measures across physical, social, caregiving, and economic HRQOL domains, and a measure of SMV Adjustment.

Objective: To examine the relationship between service member/veteran (SM/V) traumatic brain injury (TBI) severity with caregiver health-related quality of life (HRQOL).

Setting: Military treatment facility.

Participants: Caregivers ( N = 316) of SM/Vs following a TBI divided into 2 groups based on SM/V TBI severity: (1) caregivers of SM/Vs following an uncomplicated mild TBI (UnMTBI Caregiver group, n = 246), and (2) caregivers of SM//Vs following a complicated mild, moderate, severe, or penetrating TBI (STBI Caregiver group, n = 70).

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with worse cognitive outcomes after mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), its impact has not been evaluated after more severe TBI. This study aimed to determine whether PTSD symptoms are related to cognition after complicated mild, moderate, severe, and penetrating TBI. Service members ( = 137) with a history of complicated mild/moderate TBI ( = 64) or severe/penetrating TBI ( = 73) were prospectively enrolled from United States Military Treatment Facilities.

Background: The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), like many other research funders, requires its grantees to make papers available via open access (OA). This article investigates the effect of publishing in OA journals and international collaboration within and between European and sub-Saharan African countries on citation impact and likelihood of falling into the top 1% and top 10% most cited papers in poverty-related disease (PRD) research.

Methods: Disease-specific research publications were identified in the Web of Science™ and MEDLINE using Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms.

Objectives: To describe the epidemiology of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Victoria.

Study Design: Population study of all women having singleton births in Victoria in 1996.

Methods: Probabilistic record linkage of routinely collected data and capture-recapture techniques to provide an estimate of the incidence of GDM.

Essential thrombocythaemia is a rare myeloproliferative disorder that often presents with haemorrhagic or thrombotic complications. It may be detected incidentally in an asymptomatic younger adult and there are only a few case reports of essential thrombocythaemia in pregnant women. The risks posed by essential thrombocythaemia during pregnancy and its optimal management are uncertain.

To assess the maternal haematological effects of betamethasone administered in late pregnancy, an automated full blood count was performed before and daily for 5 days after betamethasone in 25 women with a singleton pregnancy between 23 and 33 weeks' gestation. From a mean (+/- SD) baseline level of 11.0+/-2.

Eating disorders and the associated behavioural problems and drug abuse are uncommon in pregnancy. When they do occur they are often unrecognized because of denial but when significant may pose a risk to both the mother and her fetus. This case illustrates a number of problems that may be encountered in women with eating disorders in pregnancy, including prolonged and recurrent metabolic disturbances and diuretic abuse.

Two cases of severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome are described. In both, serial amniocenteses were followed by resolution of the disordered inter-twin haemodynamics with 4 intact term survivors. In all reports to date of aggressive reduction with or without successful outcome, volume reduction has been dictated by subjective or semiquantitative ultrasonic estimates of liquor volume.
