Recently, fluorescent covalent staining methods have been developed for visualization of anatomical structures in cells and tissues. Coupled with expansion microscopy, these stains revealed various ultrastructural details. However, the covalently stainable chemical groups have been limited to amines, carbohydrates, and thiols.
