Skull base osteoradionecrosis (sbORN) is a severe complication of radiotherapy (RT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) that can severely affect quality of life (QOL) and may even be life-threatening. The etiology and pathogenesis of sbORN remain largely unknown or uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to identify potential risk factors for sbORN by analyzing the laboratory assessments of patients to enable early clinical interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) is a highly aggressive cancer with poor treatment outcomes, typically managed with surgery and radiotherapy, although complete surgery can be risky due to surrounding vital structures.
  • - Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are becoming a standard therapy for unresectable solid tumors, but there is little evidence supporting their use in SNSCC, and none are currently approved for this type of cancer.
  • - A case report of a 64-year-old man showed that combining chemotherapy (Docetaxel and cisplatin) with the ICI tislelizumab resulted in a complete pathological response, indicating this combination therapy may be effective for treating SNSCC.
