A microfluidic assistant beat-frequency interferometer based on a single-hole-infiltrated dual-mode microstructured optical fiber (DM-MOF) is proposed and demonstrated. The interferometer is constructed by inserting a piece of fluid-filled DM-MOF into two sections of single-mode fiber with slight core-offset. The mode-mismatch induced interferences with high-frequency dips and low-frequency envelope are observed in the transmission spectrum.

Osteoporosis is negatively correlated with body mass, whereas both osteoporosis and weight loss occur at higher incidence during the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) than the age-matched non-dementia individuals. Given that there is no evidence that being overweight is associated with AD-type cognitive dysfunction, we hypothesized that moderate weight gain might have a protective effect on the bone loss in AD without exacerbating cognitive dysfunction. Chemical characteristics of size-resolved aerosols in winter in Beijing.

Size-resolved aerosols were continuously collected by a Nano Sampler for 13 days at an urban site in Beijing during winter 2012 to measure the chemical composition of ambient aerosol particles. Data collected by the Nano Sampler and an ACSM (Aerodyne Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor) were compared. Between the data sets, similar trends and strong correlations were observed, demonstrating the validity of the Nano Sampler.

Right pulmonary artery atresia with left circumflex coronary collaterals supplying the affected lung diagnosed by V/Q scintigraphy and CTA: a case report and review of the literature.

Ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) lung scintigraphy has been a popular diagnostic test for evaluation of pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) for almost 40 years. Despite the validation of V/Q scintigraphy, it is important to remember that there are causes of unmatched perfusion defects that are not due to PE. Here, we describe a very rare case of right main pulmonary artery atresia with left circumflex coronary collaterals supplying the affected lung in an adult patient diagnosed by V/Q scan and CT angiography (CTA).

Recombinant human thrombopoietin promotes platelet engraftment after haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

Delayed platelet engraftment (DPE) is a common complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This phenomenon is also a predictor of increased treatment-related mortality and poor survival. Therefore, therapies that promote platelet engraftment to prevent DPE are needed.

Control and design of fiber birefringence characteristics based on selective-filled hybrid photonic crystal fibers.

We demonstrated a kind of birefringence-controllable hybrid photonic crystal fibers (HPCFs) by selectively infiltrating air holes of PCFs with index-tunable liquids processing higher index than silica background. Detailed theoretical investigations on mode couplings from fundamental core mode to high-index-liquid-rod modes and birefringence properties of several HPCFs were presented. Strong wavelength dependence of phase and group birefringence was found, and HPCFs with different arrangements of high index liquid rods possess distinct birefringence characteristics.

Tunable fiber polarizing filter based on a single-hole-infiltrated polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber.

A tunable fiber polarizing filter based on selectively filling a single hole of a solid-core polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber with high index liquid are proposed and demonstrated. Two groups of polarization-dependent resonance dips in the transmission spectrum of the single-hole-infiltrated photonic crystal fiber are observed. Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that these resonant dips result from the couplings between the silica core fundamental mode at x or y polarization and high order modes (TM(01), TE(01) and HE(11)) in the liquid core.

Stereotactic gamma-ray body radiation therapy for asynchronous bilateral renal cell carcinoma.

Purpose: To preliminarily evaluate the feasibility, therapeutic effect and toxicity of stereotactic gamma-ray body radiation therapy (γ-SBRT) for asynchronous bilateral renal cell carcinoma (bRCC).

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of nine patients with asynchronous bRCC who were unable to undergo surgery and received γ-SBRT between February 2002 and May 2012. A total dose of 36-51 Gy was delivered to the 50 % isodose line covering the planning target volume at 3-5 Gy/fraction, whereas a total dose of 60-85 Gy was delivered at 5-7 Gy/fraction to the gross target volume.

Twin-resonance-coupling and high sensitivity sensing characteristics of a selectively fluid-filled microstructured optical fiber.

A twin-resonance-coupling phenomenon and the sensing characteristics of a selectively fluid-filled microstructured optical fiber (SFMOF) are proposed and demonstrated. The SFMOF is realized by selectively infiltrating refractive index fluid into a single air hole located at the second ring near the core of the MOF. Twin-resonance dips are observed in the transmission spectrum.

Simultaneous measurement of curvature and strain based on fiber Bragg grating in two-dimensional waveguide array fiber.

We report on the fabrication of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with multiple resonances in a two-dimensional waveguide array microstructured optical fiber containing 91 cores. Theoretical investigation reveals that these resonances originate from the identical and nonidentical mode couplings between forward-propagating and backward-propagating LP-like (m=1, 2, 3; LP refers to linearly polarized) supermodes. Since both the central wavelength and minimum transmission of these resonant dips respond differently to curvature and axial strain, this FBG can be applied in the simultaneous measurement of curvature and axial strain.

This study examined the impact of parental HIV/AIDS on children's cognitive ability. Cross-sectional data were collected from 1625 children aged 6-18 years, including 755 AIDS orphans, 466 vulnerable children, and 404 comparison children in rural China. Participants completed measures of demographic information and the assessment of cognitive ability (verbal comprehension ability and perceptual reasoning ability).

Methods: From December 2011 to October 2012, the peripheral blood (PB) of 20 patients undergoing HLA matched (10 patients) or mismatched (10 patients) allo- HSCT without acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and of 10 related healthy donors were collected to analyze the expression of CD25+Foxp3+, IL-17a, IFN-γ and CD127 expression through 8-colour Flow cytometer.

The interferometer works from the interference between LP(01) and LP(11) core modes of the fluid-filled PCF.
