Readability of Patient Educational Materials for Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.

This study aimed to evaluate patient education materials that are focused on total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using health literacy best practices and plain language principles as frameworks. Readability assessments were conducted on a sample of nine patient education documents that are commonly given to THA and TKA surgery patients. Mean readability scores were compared across the sample.

Improving readability of informed consents for research at an academic medical institution.

Introduction: The final rule for the protection of human subjects requires that informed consent be "in language understandable to the subject" and mandates that "the informed consent must be organized in such a way that facilitates comprehension." This study assessed the readability of Institutional Review Board-approved informed consent forms at our institution, implemented an intervention to improve the readability of consent forms, and measured the first year impact of the intervention.

Methods: Readability assessment was conducted on a sample of 217 Institutional Review Board-approved informed consents from 2013 to 2015.

A phase I trial of mushroom powder in patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer: Roles of cytokines and myeloid-derived suppressor cells for Agaricus bisporus-induced prostate-specific antigen responses.

Background: Each year in the United States, nearly 50,000 prostate cancer patients exhibit a rise in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which can indicate disease recurrence. For patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer, we evaluated the effects of white button mushroom (WBM) powder on serum PSA levels and determined the tolerability and biological activity of WBM.

Methods: Patients with continuously rising PSA levels were enrolled in the study.

Occupational exposure to meat and risk of lymphoma: a multicenter case-control study from Europe.

Several studies have suggested an increased risk of lymphoma among workers exposed to meat, without conclusive evidence. We conducted a multicenter case-control study during 1998-2004 in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, including 2,007 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, 339 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma and 2,462 controls. We collected detailed information on occupational history and assessed exposure to meat in general and several types of meat via expert assessment of the questionnaires.

In this article the author discusses three diabetic emergencies: diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar non-ketotic syndrome and hypoglycaemia, which all require prompt recognition and appropriate intervention.

Suctioning techniques for the removal of respiratory secretions.

Suctioning techniques are a necessary nursing intervention to remove respiratory secretions and maintain optimum ventilation and oxygenation in patients who are unable to get rid of these secretions independently. This intervention can induce problems and it is important that the correct procedure is adhered to so that patient safety and comfort are maintained. Nurses should be competent in assessing the need for suction.
