Objective: To describe the development and the implementation of a Web-based, videoconferencing training program for caregivers of adults with traumatic brain injury in rural areas to manage cognitive and behavioral changes in the person with the injury.

Design: Feasibility study, with satisfaction and perceived utility assessed.

Intervention: Six Web-based videoconference sessions, combining didactic education and interactive problem-solving.

Decline in basic self-care abilities is an important risk factor for institutionalization in individuals with dementia. The ability to predict such decline would be of clinical importance in working with families of dementia patients. Research has suggested that cognitive decline may precede loss of functional capacity.

While there has been strong evidence for the ability of neuropsychological performance at resolution of posttraumatic amnesia to predict later productivity, there has been less conclusive evidence for the relationship of neuropsychological test scores to concurrent productivity status. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the relationship of neuropsychological test performance at 1 year post-injury to productivity assessed at the same time point. Participants were 518 persons with medically documented TBI who were enrolled in the TBI Model Systems Research and Demonstration Project.

The rate of cognitive decline in AD has been noted to vary significantly among patients. The ability to predict the probable rate of decline early in the disease process would be of great practical importance. Attempts to analyze early cognitive deficits to find patterns associated with rapid decline have met with limited success.

Objective: To investigate the factor structure and concurrent validity of the Caregiver Appraisal Scale (CAS) in a sample of caregivers of adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Design: Prospective cohort study.

Setting: Two sites: (1) Outpatient clinics associated with a comprehensive inpatient brain injury rehabilitation program and (2) a comprehensive residential postacute rehabilitation program in the Southern United States.
