Calcium sulfate hemihydrate, also known as bassanite or Plaster of Paris, is one of the most extensively produced inorganic materials worldwide. Nowadays, bassanite is mainly obtained by thermal dehydration of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) - a process that consumes considerable amounts of energy and thus leaves a significant carbon footprint. Towards a more sustainable future, alternative technologies for bassanite production at low temperatures are therefore urgently required.

In recent years, epigenetic memory systems have been developed based on DNA methylation and positive feedback systems. Achieving a robust design for these systems is generally a challenging and multifactorial task. We developed and validated a novel mathematical model to describe methylation-based epigenetic memory systems that capture switching dynamics of methylation levels and methyltransferase amounts induced by different inputs.

In order to investigate the influence of pressures up to 9bar absolute on the productivity of trickle-bed reactors for biological methanation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide, experiments were carried out in a continuously operated experimental plant with three identical reactors. The pressure increase promises a longer residence time and improved mass transfer of H due to higher gas partial pressures. The study covers effects of different pressures on important parameters like gas hourly space velocity, methane formation rate, conversion rates and product gas quality.
