Improving healthcare practice behaviors: an exploratory study identifying effective and ineffective behaviors in healthcare.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the results of exploratory research designed to develop an awareness of healthcare behaviors, with a view toward improving the customer satisfaction with healthcare services. It examines the relationship between healthcare providers and their consumers/patients/clients.

Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a critical incident methodology, with both effective and ineffective behavioral specimens examined across different provider groups.

Sexual minorities and selection of a primary care physician in a midwestern U.S. city.

How and why sexual minorities select a primary care physician is critical to the development of methods for attracting these clients to a physician's practice. Data obtained from a sample of sexual minorities in a mid-size city in our nation's heartland would indicate that these patients are loyal when the primary care physician has a positive attitude toward their sexual orientation. The data also confirms that most sexual minorities select same sex physicians but not necessarily same sexual orientation physicians because of lack of knowledge of physicians' sexual orientation.

Factors affecting students' medicine-taking habits.

This study examines college students' beliefs about health, prescriptions, doctors, and the influence those beliefs have on adherence to prescribed medication regimens. After a brief review of attitudinal factors that influence adherence to prescription medicine directions, the authors discuss measurement issues and explain the reasons for their approach to studying adherence issues. The results of the exploratory study indicate that college students' adherence to a prescribed medication regimen is more strongly associated with beliefs about health, prescription drugs, and a self-cure orientation than students' satisfaction with their physicians.
