M-STAR is a next generation polarized neutron reflectometer with advanced capabilities. A new focusing guide concept is optimized for samples with dimensions down to a millimeter range. A proposed hybrid pulse-skipping chopper will enable experiments at constant geometry at one incident angle in a broad range of wavevector transfer Q up to 0.

Iron oxide superparticles referring to a cluster of smaller nanoparticles have recently attracted much attention because of their enhanced magnetic moments but maintaining superparamagnetic behavior. In this study, iron oxide superparticles have been synthesized using a solvothermal method in the presence of six different polymers (., sodium polyacrylate, pectin sodium alginate, chitosan oligosaccharides, polyethylene glycol, and polyvinylpyrrolidine).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSpin currents can exert spin-transfer torques on magnetic systems even in the limit of vanishingly small net magnetization, as recently shown for antiferromagnets. Here, we experimentally show that a spin-transfer torque is operative in a macroscopic ensemble of weakly interacting, randomly magnetized Co nanomagnets. We employ element- and time-resolved X-ray ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR) spectroscopy to directly detect subnanosecond dynamics of the Co nanomagnets, excited into precession with cone angle ≳0.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSkyrmions hold great promise for low-energy consumption and stable high density information storage, and stabilization of the skyrmion lattice (SkX) phase at or above room temperature is greatly desired for practical use. The topological Hall effect can be used to identify candidate systems above room temperature, a challenging regime for direct observation by Lorentz electron microscopy. Atomically ordered FeGe thin films are grown epitaxially on Ge(111) substrates with ~ 4 % tensile strain.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFConfirming the origin of Gilbert damping by experiment has remained a challenge for many decades, even for simple ferromagnetic metals. Here, we experimentally identify Gilbert damping that increases with decreasing electronic scattering in epitaxial thin films of pure Fe. This observation of conductivitylike damping, which cannot be accounted for by classical eddy-current loss, is in excellent quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions of Gilbert damping due to intraband scattering.
