Aim: To determine whether a specialized team and diabetes education improves the implementation of guidelines and glucose values.
Methods: We conducted a prospective study of 611 nonselected, consecutive patients attending for elective hip or knee arthroplasty.
Unlabelled: The association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and post-fracture mortality indicates beneficial relatively high serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations. A 1-year cohort study on 245 hip fracture patients in Finland indicated the lowest 3-year mortality and highest survival among patients with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 50-74 nmol/L.
Purpose: To explore pre-fracture serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level as a factor associated with post-fracture survival among a cohort of hip fracture patients in Finland.
Purpose: We described the use of benzodiazepines (BZDs), z-hypnotics, and antidepressants; analyzed the consistency between recorded and detected BZDs among hip fracture patients admitted to two Finnish hospitals during one year; and compared the results with corresponding results from 12 years earlier.
Methods: Current use of medication was obtained from the National Prescription Register. Urine and blood samples used to detect BZD were taken during admission.

Methods: Capillary plasma glucose (CPG) was measured prospectively four times daily of 209 patients undergoing elective hip or knee surgery.
Background And Aims: Reoperations after operative treatment of hip fracture patients may be associated with higher costs and inferior survival. We examined the acute hospital costs, long-term reoperation rates, and survival of patients with a new hip fracture.
Materials And Methods: A total of 490 consecutive new hip fracture patients treated at a single center between 31 December 2004 and 6 December 2006 were analyzed retrospectively.

Background And Aims: Revision arthroplasty of metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints in chronic inflammatory arthritis patients after silicone implants is challenging due of severe bone loss and soft tissue deficiencies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of revision MCP arthroplasty using poly-L/D-lactic acid 96:4 (PLDLA) interposition implant and morcelised allograft or autograft bone packing in patients with failed MCP arthroplasties and severe osteolysis.
Material And Methods: The study group consisted of 15 patients (15 hands and 36 joints) at a mean follow-up of seven years (range 5-10 years).
Resin is a natural product of coniferous trees. Salves manufactured from spruce resin (Picea abies) have been used for centuries to treat wounds and skin infections. We report a pilot clinical trial designed to investigate healing rates, factors that contribute to delayed wound healing, cost-effectiveness, and incidence of allergic reactions when resin salve is used to treat complicated surgical wounds.

The purpose of our study was to analyze medium-term results at our institution.
Materials And Methods: Altogether 38 TAAs using AES prostheses were carried out between 2003 and 2007.
It was hypothesized that the bioresorbable interposition implant might offer a viable alternative to conventional silicone implant arthroplasty in rheumatoid metacarpophalangeal joint destruction. A randomized clinical study was performed to compare a stemless poly-L/D-lactide copolymer 96 : 4 (PLDLA) implant with the Swanson silicone implant. Results in 52 patients (53 hands and 175 joints) at a mean follow-up of 2 years (minimum 1 year) showed that the improvement in clinical assessments was comparable in both groups, except for better maintenance of palmar alignment in the Swanson group.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-five patients were randomized to either PLDLA metatarsophalangeal joint interposition arthroplasty group (16 patients) or to conventional metatarsal head resection group (19 patients).
Between 1982 and 1997, 403 consecutive patients (522 elbows) with rheumatoid arthritis underwent Souter-Strathclyde total elbow replacement. By the end of 2007, there had been 66 revisions for aseptic loosening in 60 patients. The mean time of follow-up was 10.

In cells transfected with green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged Has3, the dorsal surface was decorated by up to 150 slender, 3-20-microm-long microvillus-type plasma membrane protrusions, which also contained filamentous actin, the hyaluronan receptor CD44, and lipid raft microdomains. Enzymatic activity of HAS was required for the growth of the microvilli, which were not present in cells transfected with other GFP proteins or inactive GFP-Has3 mutants or in cells incubated with exogenous soluble hyaluronan.
