This work investigates the proposed enhanced efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) by activating photosensitizers (PSs) with Cherenkov light (CL). The approaches of Yoon et al. to test the effect of CL with external radiation were taken up and refined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of different molar activities (A) of a radioactive ligand, Pb-PSC-TOC, on the uptake of neuroendocrine tumor cells, where high expression of somatostatin receptor subtype 2 allows targeted treatment.
  • The radiolabeling process of Pb-PSC-TOC was successfully optimized, resulting in high purity and yield, and cell uptake was assessed in various cell lines, showing the highest uptake in AR42 J cells at a specific molar activity.
  • Findings indicate that a moderate molar activity of 15-40 MBq/nmol maximizes cell uptake, with potential for even higher activities in future experiments to optimize

Background: Clinical reasoning is an essential health care professional skill. Typically, pharmacy students figure out how to reason clinically on their own through the observation of skilled clinicians in various patient care settings. The need to start developing clinical reasoning skills in the pre-clinical years has increased interest in classroom-based clinical reasoning instruction.

How cells coordinate their spatial positioning through intercellular signaling events is poorly understood. Here we address this topic using Caenorhabditis elegans vulval patterning during which hypodermal vulval precursor cells (VPCs) adopt distinct cell fates determined by their relative positions to the gonadal anchor cell (AC). LIN-3/EGF signaling by the AC induces the central VPC, P6.

Objectives: To create a bingo game that would increase student interaction with course material and provide students with options for demonstrating learning and earning extra credit.

Design: A bingo game was created in which each of the 25 squares contained an activity (eg, video, crossword puzzle, poem, quiz) that encouraged interaction with course material and appealed to multiple learning styles. Students who achieved bingo earned a 5-point (5%) grade bonus.

Background And Objectives: Host recognition pathways for gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria comprise pattern recognition receptors among which Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a pivotal role. TLRs share common signaling pathways yet exhibit specificity as well. Periodontal disease is initiated and maintained in the first line by gram-negative but also gram-positive bacterial infection of the gingival sulcus.

Availability of different WHO-step 3 opioids has encouraged the discussion on their value and led to the concepts of opioid rotation. Rotation is suggested, when other measures fail to achieve optimal analgesia and tolerability in cancer pain treatment. Opioid use was assessed in a prospective cohort study of 412 palliative care patients from 14 inpatient and outpatient palliative care facilities in Germany.

Over 15 months, 60 patients at a German University Hospital became infected or colonized by a multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain, which was isolated from tracheal secretions, blood, urine, venous catheters, ascites and several wounds. Most patients had undergone invasive treatment (surgery, cancer therapy). The genetic relationship of the isolates was investigated by pulsed field gel electrophoresis.

To improve quantitative assessment of motor unit recruitment by standard concentric needle electromyography (CNEMG), hypothenar muscles of 22 healthy subjects, 18 with denervation, and 10 with a myopathy were studied. Discharge rates of motor units were measured in CNEMG recordings comprising action potentials of, at most, 4 motor units. Motor unit number estimation (MUNE) was done using the manual incremental method.

The authors investigated whether there was a decline in infants sleeping prone and other modifiable risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Germany, where, as in some other countries, no nationwide intervention campaign against the prone sleeping position had been initiated. Data were obtained from parents by mailed questionnaires in two cross-sectional studies in 1991 (n = 3,330) and 1995 (n = 3,124). Prevalence of prone sleeping decreased from 37.

A study was started a) to assess the incidence self-poisoning in pre-school children and b) to evaluate the impact of an emergency set containing activated carbon and an antifoam. Cooperation was established with the regional legal sickness funds, the regional physician association, and two pharmaceutical companies. Incidence and extent of unintentional self-poisoning among pre-school children are to be determined.

Spatially regulated activation of the Drosophila epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor by its ligand, Gurken, is required for establishment of the dorsal/ventral axis of the oocyte and embryo. During mid-oogenesis, Gurken is concentrated at the dorsal-anterior of the oocyte and is thought to activate the EGF receptor pathway in adjacent follicle cells. In response to this signal, dorsal follicle cell fate is determined.

This paper deals with the establishment of the National Breastfeeding Committee at the Robert-Koch-Institut and its activities. As the highest level scientific and advisory board for the German Federal Health Ministry the institute obtained permission from the state authorities to carry out a survey of the local health offices. A finding of this survey was that the different health offices apparently place different priorities on advising mothers in regard to breastfeeding.

Microgravity-induced changes in the bioavailability of drugs may influence the efficacy or toxicity of drugs. The bioavailability of orally administered drugs may be altered by changes in dissolution rate, intestinal microflora, intraluminal enzymes, epithelial enzymes, rate of passage across the gastrointestinal epithelium, gastric emptying rate, intestinal transit time, hepatic first pass metabolism, and gastrointestinal and hepatic blood flow. Limited data from antiorthostatic bed rest and inflight studies provide preliminary evidence that the bioavailability of orally administered drugs in space may be decreased or subject to more interindividual variation than expected from ground-based studies.

To assess the functional domains of the proteins encoded by E(spl) and HLH-m5, two genes of the Enhancer of split complex [E(SPL)-C] of Drosophila melanogaster, a number of variants have been made by in vitro mutagenesis, transformed into the germ line of the wild-type, and genetically combined with a chromosomal deletion lacking four of the genes of the E(SPL)-C. All constructs used attenuated the neurogenic phenotype associated with this deletion. However, constructs encoding proteins with truncated carboxy-termini exibited in all cases a higher activity than constructs encoding the full length version of the protein.

Helix-loop-helix proteins play important roles in developmental processes, such as myogenesis, neurogenesis, and sex determination. The gene Enhancer of split [E(spl)] of Drosophila, a member of a gene complex that is involved in early neurogenesis, encodes a protein with a basic domain and a helix-loop-helix motif. We took advantage of a dominant mutation of this gene, E(spl)D, to define in vivo structural features of this protein for proper function.

The comparative effects of continuous versus intermittent cimetidine infusion on theophylline pharmacokinetics were evaluated in 12 nonsmoking healthy male volunteers. Each subject received aminophylline 0.9 mg/kg/hr over 6 hours alone (control) and in random order at 1 week intervals, in combination with intermittent cimetidine (300 mg IV over 15 minutes every 6 hours) and continuous cimetidine (50 mg/hr IV) infusions.
