Small-scale models of dementia care are a progressive approach to improve care for people living with dementia. These models intend to provide a home-like environment with a small number of residents in each living unit, easy access to services and facilities, a dedicated team of staff and flexible routines. This study was undertaken during the construction phase of a new village and provided a unique opportunity to explore expectations of the village among the local community.

Objective: Australian aged care workforce surveys offer limited information about those who engage in online dementia education regarding their occupational health and well-being. A salutogenic approach was applied to an aged care context to quantitatively assess both positive and negative aspects of health at work to inform the development of workplace interventions tailored to those interested in self-development.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron (MN) disease, with no present cure. The progressive loss of MNs is the hallmark of ALS. We have previously shown the therapeutic effects of the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) inhibitor, potassium bisperoxo (picolinato) vanadium (bpV[pic]), in models of neurological injury and demonstrated significant neuroprotective effects on MN survival.

Surface coatings alter transcriptional responses to silver nanoparticles following oral exposure.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in food packaging materials, dental care products and other consumer goods and can result in oral exposure. To determine whether AgNP coatings modulate transcriptional responses to AgNP exposure, we exposed mice orally to 20 nm citrate (cit)-coated AgNPs (cit-AgNPs) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated AgNPs (PVP-AgNPs) at a 4 mg/kg dose for 7 consecutive days and analyzed changes in the expression of protein-coding genes and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), a new class of regulatory RNAs, in the liver. We identified unique and common expression signatures of protein-coding and lncRNA genes, altered biological processes and signaling pathways, and coding-non-coding gene interactions for cit-AgNPs and PVP-AgNPs.

Using the loss-by-ignition method, this study investigated differences in the total content of incombustible material (as a proxy for total mineral content), between feral populations in southeast Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. A total of 102 were ignited, and percent total incombustible material was not proportional to the body size, or gender of the crayfish.

Background: The attitude of General Practitioner's (GP's) towards dementia and confidence in their clinical abilities impacts on diagnosis rates and management of the condition. The purpose of the present research is to refine and confirm the reliability and validity of the General Practitioner Attitudes and Confidence Scale for Dementia (GPACS-D) as a tool to measure confidence and attitude.

Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase is a key metabolic enzyme that is a potential target for oncology. Utilizing publicly available crystal structures of NAMPT and in silico docking of our internal compound library, a NAMPT inhibitor, 1, obtained from a phenotypic screening effort was replaced with a more synthetically tractable scaffold. This compound then provided an excellent foundation for further optimization using crystallography driven structure based drug design.

Conflicts of interest, stemming from relationships between health professionals and the pharmaceutical industry, remain a highly divisive and inflammatory issue in healthcare. Given that most jurisdictions rely on industry to self-regulate with respect to its interactions with health professionals, it is surprising that little research has explored industry leaders' understandings of conflicts of interest. Drawing from in-depth interviews with ten pharmaceutical industry leaders based in Australia, we explore the normalized and structural management of conflicts of interest within pharmaceutical companies.
