The flotation-restriction environmental stimulation technique (FR) may have utility as a recovery tool for improving performance in elite competitive athletes and Special Operations Forces Operators (SOs). Studies suggest that FR may ameliorate various neurophysiological disorders and improve performance in recreational and elite athletic populations. We sought to understand whether there is evidence to support the use of FR to enhance physiological and psychological performance parameters in the SO population and to provide postulations as to the mechanisms of action of FR therapy.

Introduction: Special Operations Forces (SOF) Operators (SOs) are exposed to high levels of physiological and cognitive stressors early in their career, starting with the rigors of training, combined with years of recurring deployments. Over time, these stressors may degrade SOs' performance, health, and recovery.

Objectives: (1) To evaluate sources identifying and describing physiological and psychological stressors affecting performance, health, and recovery in SOs, and (2) to explore interventions and phenomena of interest, such as the biological mechanisms of overtraining syndrome (OTS).

The delta of the Mekong River in Vietnam has been heavily impacted by anthropogenic stresses in recent years, such as upstream dam construction and sand mining within the main and distributary channels, leading to riverbank and coastal erosion. Intensive bathymetric surveys, conducted within the Tien River branch during the dry and wet season 2018, reveal a high magnitude of sand mining activities. For the year 2018, an analysis of bathymetric maps and the local refilling processes leads to an estimated sand extraction volume of 4.

Landscape context affects predator-prey interactions and predator diet composition, yet little is known about landscape effects on insect gut microbiomes, a determinant of physiology and condition. Here, we combine laboratory and field experiments to examine the effects of landscape context on the gut bacterial community and body condition of predatory insects. Under laboratory conditions, we found that prey diversity increased bacterial richness in insect guts.

Article Synopsis
  • Plant diversity influences the species richness and abundance of higher trophic level taxa, but its effects on omnivores and their interactions have not been extensively studied due to methodological limitations.
  • Researchers utilized next generation sequencing (NGS) to analyze beetle regurgitates from the omnivorous ground beetle Pterostichus melanarius, allowing for the identification of various taxa involved in different types of interactions.
  • The findings indicate that increased plant diversity and vegetation cover enhance trophic interactions, intraguild predation, and even neutral interactions with organisms like fungi and protists, highlighting the importance of plant diversity in multitrophic interactions.

Background: Any spine structure that is innervated by afferent nociceptive nerve fibers is a potential pain generator. In the lumbar spine, the most studied pain generators include: sacroiliac joints, the zygapophysial joints, the intervertebral discs, myofascial structures. Anomalous lumbosacral articulations, the spinous processes, and lumbar spine osteophytes are less commonly reported.

Article Synopsis
  • Early physical functional changes after gastric bypass surgery (GBS) were studied to understand their effect on health-related quality of life (HR-QOL), using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and the SF-36 survey.
  • Twenty-five participants completed these measures before surgery and at 3 and 6 months after, with findings showing significant increases in walking distances and improvements in HR-QOL as measured by the SF-36.
  • The study concluded that better functional capacity post-surgery was linked to improved quality of life, although walking distances were still lower than those of weight-matched peers after 6 months.

Patients will commonly seek medical attention for refractory abdominal pain. The many causes of abdominal pain include pathologies of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems. Unfortunately, a large number of patients will develop chronic abdominal pain that is recalcitrant to definitive therapies and nonspecific treatments such as cognitive-behavioral, physical, and pharmacologic therapies.

Background: Advanced age is considered a relative contraindication to primary bariatric surgery at some institutions. As life expectancy is steadily increasing and quality of life is improving in our elderly population, we may need to reconsider the health benefits that obese elderly patients can obtain from bariatric surgery. Therefore, we examine the operative outcomes, weight loss, reduction of comorbidities, and medication requirements in patients older than 60 years compared with those younger than 60 years undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Ever since its initial development in the late 1960s, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been used to treat a number of painful conditions. European practice, in contrast to that in North America, has used peripheral arterial disease (PAD) as a primary indication for SCS. First employed in patients with PAD in 1976, SCS was shown by Cook et al.

The minute concentrations of many biochemically and clinically important substances are currently estimated by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Traditionally, the most popular approaches to the statistical analysis of RIA data have been to linearize the data through transformation and fit the calibration curve using least squares or to directly fit a nonlinear calibration curve using least squares. Estimates of the hormone concentration in patients are then obtained using this curve.

A study was initiated by the Minnesota Dental Association to identify criteria that dental practitioners use in defining a dental manpower shortage area and to determine the perceived effectiveness and acceptability of solutions to the manpower shortage problem. This report from the association presents the study findings. The five factors, in order of importance, that should be considered in a definition of a manpower shortage area are the public's "dental IQ," the ratio of dentists to population, the availability of dental appointment times, the age and productivity of practicing dentists in the area, and the distance patients must travel to the dentist.
