The extracellular matrix (ECM) performs both as a static scaffold and as a dynamic, viscoelastic milieu that actively participates in cell signaling and mechanical feedback loops. Recently, biomaterials with tunable viscoelastic properties have been utilized to mimic the native ECM in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicines. These materials can be designed to support cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation, facilitating the repair or replacement of damaged tissues.

As the final stage of disease-related tissue injury and repair, fibrosis is characterized by excessive accumulation of the extracellular matrix. Unrestricted accumulation of stromal cells and matrix during fibrosis impairs the structure and function of organs, ultimately leading to organ failure. The major etiology of fibrosis is an injury caused by genetic heterogeneity, trauma, virus infection, alcohol, mechanical stimuli, and drug.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cocaine abuse disrupts the blood-brain barrier (BBB) by decreasing the expression of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) in brain cells, which leads to cognitive issues and increased BBB leakage.
  • - The study reveals that cocaine elevates the level of miR-320a, which then reduces GLUT1 expression through the activation of the beta 2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2).
  • - Melatonin can help counteract cocaine-induced BBB disruption and cognitive impairment by boosting GLUT1 expression through a specific signaling pathway, suggesting it could be a potential treatment for cocaine-related problems.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by multiple causes. The main pathological features of AD are β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition, hyperphosphorylation of Tau protein, and progressive neuronal loss. Pyroptosis is one of the main forms of neuronal death, which is mainly caused by the activation of Gasdermin protein by upstream signals and the release of its N-terminal domain on the cell membrane.

Background: A growing number of studies show that people with similar blood glucose levels have different levels of glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and relying only on HbA1c may lead to clinical decision-making errors. The haemoglobin glycation index (HGI) quantifies the difference in HbA1c among individuals and is strongly linked to the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the connection between this phenomenon and the poor outcomes of patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is currently unknown.

Background: The impact of fibroblasts on the immune system provides insight into the function of fibroblasts. In various tissue microenvironments, multiple fibroblast subtypes interact with immunocytes by secreting growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines, leading to wound healing, fibrosis, and escape of cancer immune surveillance. However, the specific mechanisms involved in the fibroblast-immunocyte interaction network have not yet been fully elucidated.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the main method to detect human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression levels. However, IHC is invasive and cannot reflect HER2 expression status in real time. The aim of this study was to construct and verify three types of radiomics models based on F-fuorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging and to evaluate the predictive ability of these radiomics models for the expression status of HER2 in patients with gastric cancer (GC).

Photonics is currently undergoing an era of miniaturization thanks in part to two-dimensional (2D) optical metasurfaces. Their ability to sculpt and redirect optical momentum can give rise to an optical force, which acts orthogonally to the direction of light propagation. Powered by a single unfocused light beam, these lateral optical forces (LOFs) can be used to drive advanced metavehicles and are controlled via the incident beam's polarization.

Article Synopsis
  • - Uterine endometrial cancer (EC) is increasingly prevalent, and traditional hormone therapy using progesterone is effective for initial treatment, but many patients develop resistance over time, leading to poor outcomes for PR-negative tumors.
  • - Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi), like entinostat and romidepsin, have shown promise in reversing the downregulation of progesterone receptors (PR) in EC cells, enhancing their responsiveness to progestin therapy, and demonstrating tumor growth inhibition in models.
  • - A clinical trial supported by these findings indicated that while entinostat combined with MPA (a progestin) reduced tumor proliferation markers, romidepsin significantly improved treatment effectiveness and up
