Utility of IL-2 Complexes in Promoting the Survival of Murine Orthotopic Forelimb Vascularized Composite Allografts.

Background: Vascularized composite allografts (VCA) are novel, life-enhancing forms of transplantation (Tx). However, host immune responses to the various VCA components, especially those involving skin, are complex and make selection of appropriate therapy challenging. Although the interplay between Foxp3+ T regulatory (Treg) cells and CD4 and CD8 effector T cells is of central importance in determining the acceptance or rejection of solid organ allografts, there is little information available concerning the contribution of Treg cells to VCA survival.

The 8th Annual Shanghai Symposium on Clinical and Pharmaceutical Solutions through Analysis (CPSA): Clinical and Pharmaceutical Success from Discovery to Regulatory Approval: Biomarkers, Modeling and Analytical Technologies (CPSA Shanghai 2017); Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel, Shanghai, China, 12-14 April 2017 was held on 12-14 April 2017 in Shanghai, China. The meeting was featured with highly interactive events including diversified symposia, workshops, roundtable discussions, conference awards and poster sessions. There were over 220 participants with 61 oral presentations and 20 posters presented.

Polyimide Aerogels Cross-Linked with Aminated Ag Nanowires: Mechanically Strong and Tough.

In this study, polyimide (PI)/Ag nanowire (AgNW) nanocomposite aerogels with extremely high mechanical performance have been fabricated utilizing amine-modified AgNWs as mechanical nanoreinforcement particulates and crosslinking agents. Initially, AgNWs were fabricated and surface modified by -aminothiophenol (PATP), then the aminated AgNWs were dispersed into polyamide acid solution and aerogels were prepared by supercritical CO₂ drying. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectrometry were carried out on A-AgNWs (aminated Ag nanowires) to prove the successful modification.

An investigation of perceived vehicle speed from a driver's perspective.

Purpose: Speed estimation of drivers' own vehicles and other vehicles on the road is an important task for drivers and is also crucial to the roadway safety. The objective of the study was to examine the effects of multiple factors such as image scale, speed, road type, driving experience, and gender on the speed perception of drivers' own vehicles.

Methods: Thirty participants consisted of 17 males and 13 females, including 13 without driving experience.

Retrograde Type A Aortic Dissection After Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Retrograde type A aortic dissection (RTAD) is a potentially lethal complication after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). However, data are limited regarding the development of RTAD post-TEVAR. This systematic review aims to define the incidence, mortality, and potential risk factors of RTAD post-TEVAR.

Novel one-pot ATP regeneration system based on three-enzyme cascade for industrial CTP production.

Objectives: To develop a new one-pot polyphosphate kinase (PPK) system with low cost and high efficiency for ATP regeneration in industrial CTP production.

Results: We developed a new one-pot PPK system by applying a three-enzyme cascade (CMK, NDK and PPK) with an in vitro polyP-based ATP regeneration system. The PPK was selected from twenty sources, and was made solvable by fusion expressing with soluble protein and constructing polycistronic plasmids, or co-expressing with molecular chaperones GroES/EL.

Reversal of hyperactive Wnt signaling-dependent adipocyte defects by peptide boronic acids.

Deregulated Wnt signaling and altered lipid metabolism have been linked to obesity, diabetes, and various cancers, highlighting the importance of identifying inhibitors that can modulate Wnt signaling and aberrant lipid metabolism. We have established a model with hyperactivated Wnt signaling caused by partial loss of axin, a key component of the Wnt cascade. The mutant larvae are transparent and have severe adipocyte defects caused by up-regulation of β-catenin transcriptional activities.

Human lung tumor FOXP3+ Tregs upregulate four "Treg-locking" transcription factors.

Experimental data indicate that FOXP3+ Tregs can markedly curtail host antitumor immune responses, but the properties of human intratumoral Tregs are still largely unknown, in part due to significant methodologic problems. We studied the phenotypic, functional, epigenetic, and transcriptional features of Tregs in 92 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, comparing the features of Tregs within tumors versus corresponding blood, lung, and lymph node samples. Intratumoral Treg numbers and suppressive function were significantly increased compared with all other sites but did not display a distinctive phenotype by flow cytometry.

Ultrasensitive Silicon Nanowire Sensor Developed by a Special Ag Modification Process for Rapid NH Detection.

Surface functionalization is very effective in enhancing sensing properties of a chemiresistive gas sensor. In this work, we develop a novel and cost-effective process to prepare Ag-modified silicon nanowire (SiNW) sensors and further suggest a resistance effect model to clarify the enhanced sensing mechanism of Ag-modified SiNWs. The SiNWs were formed via metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE), and the Ag nanoparticle (NP) modification was achieved in situ based on the MACE-produced Ag dendrites by involving a crucial anisotropic postetching of TMAH.

Selection and Validation of Appropriate Reference Genes for qRT-PCR Analysis in Fort.

Due to its sensitivity and specificity, real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) is a popular technique for investigating gene expression levels in plants. Based on the Minimum Information for Publication of Real-Time Quantitative PCR Experiments (MIQE) guidelines, it is necessary to select and validate putative appropriate reference genes for qRT-PCR normalization. In the current study, three algorithms, geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper, were applied to assess the expression stability of 10 candidate reference genes across five different tissues and three different abiotic stresses in Fort.

Prognostic Nomogram for Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated with FOLFOX 4.

Background: The Oxaliplatin plus 5-Fluorouracil /Leucovorin (FOLFOX4) regimen have been approved by Chinese Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), and covered by health insurance for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in China. However, the efficacy of FOLFOX4 for HCC patients is still under debate. In this study, we aimed to establish a nomogram to identify HCC patients who might benefit from FOLFOX4 chemotherapy base on individual profile.

Blood glucose concentration and risk of liver cancer: systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

The question of whether elevated blood glucose is a risk factor for liver cancer has been intensively studied, yet with inconsistent results. To explore the relationship between blood glucose concentration and risk of liver cancer, we conduct a meta-analysis of prospective studies. Literature search was comprehensively performed using database of PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library through October 2016.

Effect of Baseline Characteristics on the Outcome of Stent Retriever-Based Thrombectomy in Acute Basilar Artery Occlusions: A Single-Center Experience and Pooled Data Analysis.

Objectives: To explore the association of baseline characteristics and the outcome of patients with acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO) after stent retriever-based thrombectomy (SRT).

Methods: Clinical and imaging information of consecutive SRT-treated patients with BAO from a comprehensive stroke center and up-to-date literature were reviewed respectively. The impact of baseline variables toward favorable outcome was evaluated using subgroup analysis and odds ratio (OR) extracted from published data together with single-center records using pooled analysis.

Smoking as a Risk Factor for the Occurrence of Atrial Fibrillation in Men Versus Women: A Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies.

Background: Although smoking is known to be associated with cardiovascular diseases, the number of large-scale cohort studies on the association between smoking and atrial fibrillation (AF) is limited and the results obtained are also inconsistent, and even fewer studies have addressed the difference between the male and female genders. The present study was intended to clarify and quantify the association between smoking and the risk of AF in men versus women.

Methods: Using AF- and smoking-related keywords, a comprehensive literature search on PubMed, Embase and Web of Science was conducted with a time limit until December 2016, which was followed by manual screening, quality assessment and data extraction.

A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method based on post column derivatization for automated analysis of urinary hexanal and heptanal.

A fully automated in-tube solid phase microextraction/liquid chromatography-post column derivatization-mass spectrometry (in-tube SPME/LC-PCD-MS) method was developed for the analysis of urinary hexanal and heptanal. Online in-tube SPME enabled effective enrichment of the low level aldehydes and elimination of matrix interferences. PCD could be simply realized by mixing the LC elute and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HAHC) solution with just a tee.

Transfer of monolayer TMD WS and Raman study of substrate effects.

A facile transfer process for transition metal dichalcogenide WS flakes is reported and the effect of the underlying substrate on the flake properties is investigated using Raman spectroscopy. The flakes are transferred from their growth substrate using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and a wet etch to allow the user to transfer the flakes to a final substrate using a microscope and micromanipulator combined with semi-transparent Kapton tape. The substrates used range from insulators such as industry standard high-k dielectric HfO and "green polymer" parylene-C, to conducting chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene.

Update on the diagnosis and treatment of tracheal and bronchial injury.

Tracheal and bronchial injury, including iatrogenic injury and traumatic injury, the former usually occurred in the operation, intubation or bronchoscopy. The latter was occurred in a variety of blunt trauma, often combined with a variety of complex injuries. The therapeutic approach can be differentiated, surgical or conservative, no criteria has been universally accepted.

Monolayer WS Nanopores for DNA Translocation with Light-Adjustable Sizes.

Two-dimensional materials are promising for a range of applications, as well as testbeds for probing the physics of low-dimensional systems. Tungsten disulfide (WS) monolayers exhibit a direct band gap and strong photoluminescence (PL) in the visible range, opening possibilities for advanced optoelectronic applications. Here, we report the realization of two-dimensional nanometer-size pores in suspended monolayer WS membranes, allowing for electrical and optical response in ionic current measurements.

Signal Detection Based on Time to Onset Algorithm in Spontaneous Reporting System of China.

Introduction: The method of time-to-onset (TTO) has been proposed to overcome the drawbacks of traditional disproportionality analyses (DPAs), and it has been used for detecting safety signals of vaccines and some non-vaccine products in spontaneous reporting systems (SRSs). However, there is no consensus on its superiority over DPAs. Further, it is still not clear whether this novel approach can be generalized to the entire national SRS database.

Palladium-Catalyzed Synthesis of Aryl Vinyl Sulfides via 1,3-Oxathiolanes As Vinyl Sulfide Surrogates.

A nontraditional approach to synthesizing aryl vinyl sulfides is described. 2,2-Diphenyl-1,3-oxathiolane slowly liberates a vinyl sulfide anion under basic conditions. Using a Pd/Xantphos catalyst system to activate a wide range of aryl bromides, this transient sulfide species can be effectively trapped and fed into a traditional Pd/Pd catalytic cycle.

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system gene polymorphisms in gestational hypertension and preeclampsia: A case-control gene-association study.

Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH, including preeclampsia [PE] and gestational hypertension [GH]) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have some metabolic changes and risk factors in common. Many studies have reported associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) genes and CVDs (particularly hypertension), and their findings have provided candidate SNPs for research on genetic correlates of PIH. We explored the association between hypertension-related RAAS SNPs and PIH in a Chinese population.
