Over 90% of cancer patients succumb to metastasis, yet conventional frontline therapy struggles to halt the progression of metastatic tumors. Targeted radionuclide therapy, which delivers radiation precisely to tumor sites, shows promise for treating metastasis. The rational design of a prodrug activation platform using radionuclides would be an ideal approach to synergize chemotherapy with targeted radionuclide therapy, yet it has not been established.

In terahertz communication systems, lens antennas used in transceivers are basically plano-convex dielectric lenses. The size of a plano-convex lens increases as the aperture increases, and thinner lenses have longer focal lengths. Through theory and simulation, we designed a Fresnel lens suitable for the terahertz band to meet the requirements of large aperture and short focal length, and simulated the performance, advantages, and disadvantages of the terahertz Fresnel lens.

A parabolic conformal multi-order OAM-generating transmitarray with novel C-I-shaped grating cell is presented in this paper. The novel cell is composed of three layers of the upper and lower grating structures, and the C-I-shaped metal in the middle layer. Compared with the traditional C-shaped structure, the novel cell can be adjusted to cover 360° transmission phase change with high transmission coefficient at the frequency band of 10-20 GHz.

Article Synopsis
  • Soil infiltration is vital for plant water needs, especially in semi-arid areas like the Loess Plateau, but its responses to vegetation restoration types are not well understood.
  • This study investigates how different revegetation methods impact soil infiltration through field experiments with nine plant species across five restoration types, finding that artificial forests and natural grasslands improved soil properties significantly.
  • Results revealed that increased root characteristics from vegetation restoration boosted soil stability and porosity, leading to higher infiltration rates, with soil particle size and porosity being key predictors of these enhanced properties.

Intratumour heterogeneity significantly hinders the efficacy of anticancer therapies. Compared with drug perturbation experiments, which yield pharmacological data at the bulk cell level, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology provides a means to capture molecular heterogeneity at single-cell resolution. Here, scPharm is introduced, a computational framework that integrates pharmacological profiles with scRNA-seq data to identify pharmacological subpopulations of cells within a tumour and prioritize tailored drugs.

Background: Outbreaks of the coral predator Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (CoTS) pose a severe threat to coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. In 2018, the South China Sea (SCS) experienced significant CoTS outbreaks, leading to extensive coral mortality across the Xisha, Zhongsha, Dongsha, and Nansha Islands, severely impacting the coral reef ecosystem.

Results: To explore the origins of these outbreaks, we conducted a comprehensive genomic analysis using data from genomic single nucleotide polymorphism sites (SNPs) and mitochondrial haplotypes.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how sodium propionate (SP), a substance produced during the fermentation of dietary fiber, impacts acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in rats induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), focusing on lung function and inflammatory responses.
  • - Results showed that SP helped improve low oxygen levels and reduced lung and intestinal tissue damage by lowering pro-inflammatory markers like TNF-α and IL-6 while increasing the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10.
  • - SP also affected key cellular pathways by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and promoting autophagy, suggesting potential therapeutic benefits for ARDS related to inflammation and tissue repair.

Article Synopsis
  • Plants are increasingly challenged by environmental pollutants and high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), prompting researchers to investigate the combined effect of elevated CO2 and cyanide on rice seedlings grown hydroponically under nitrogen deficiency.
  • The study found that higher CO2 levels improved growth in rice seedlings treated with cyanide, significantly influencing gene expression and amino acid metabolism.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that using elevated CO2 can enhance plant growth while managing nitrogen pollution, presenting a new strategy for rice cultivation in nitrogen-deficient conditions.

Background: The cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel metric for assessing cardiometabolic health and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), yet its relationship with insulin resistance (IR) and prediabetes (preDM) is not well-studied. There is also a gap in understanding the nonlinear associations between CMI and these conditions. Our study aimed to elucidate these associations.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study tests a new decontamination method using power ultrasound (PU) against the traditional NaOH-NALC method, comparing their effectiveness in isolating mycobacteria from stool samples.
  • * Results showed that the PU method not only increased the culture positivity rates for M.TB and nontuberculous mycobacteria, but also led to lower contamination rates, making it a promising alternative for stool mycobacterial culture.

This paper presents an innovative fusion model called "CALSE-LSTM," which integrates Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs), self-attention mechanisms, and squeeze-and-excitation attention mechanisms to optimize the estimation accuracy of the State of Charge (SoC). The model incorporates battery historical data as input and employs a dual-attention mechanism based on CNN-LSTM to extract diverse features from the input data, thereby enhancing the model's ability to learn hidden information. To further improve model performance, we fine-tune the model parameters using the Pelican algorithm.

Background: As hypertensive heart disease (HHD) presents a significant public health challenge globally, we analysed its global, regional, and national burdens and trends from 1990 to 2019.

Methods: We used data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study, focussing on the age-standardised prevalence rates (ASPRs) of HHD prevalence, age-standardised disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates, average annual percentage change (AAPC), and risk factor attributions. We compared the HHD burden across sociodemographic index (SDI) strata, gender, age groups, and 204 countries and territories.

The presence of thiocyanate (SCN) in irrigation water has adverse effects on both plant growth and crop output. Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is an important gaseous signaling molecule that can alleviate SCN stress. Flavonoids are secondary compounds produced by plants and are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom.

Subsoil stores the majority of soil organic carbon (SOC), and plays a vital role in the global carbon cycle in terrestrial ecosystems and in regulating climate change. Response of SOC decomposition to temperature warming (TR) is a crucial parameter to predict SOC dynamics under global warming. However, it remains unknown how TR varies across the whole soil profile and responds to exogenous C and N inputs.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is characterized by an unregulated inflammatory reaction, often leading to severe morbidity and ultimately death. Excessive inflammation caused by M1 macrophage polarization and pyroptosis has been revealed to have a critical role in ALI. Recent study suggests that glycolytic reprogramming is important in the regulation of macrophage polarization and pyroptosis.

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are the leading etiological agent causing the worldwide outbreaks of acute epidemic non-bacterial gastroenteritis. Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are commonly acknowledged as cellular receptors or co-receptors for HuNoVs. However, certain genotypes of HuNoVs cannot bind with any HBGAs, suggesting potential additional co-factors and attachment receptors have not been identified yet.

Exposure to environmental BaP or its metabolite BPDE causes trophoblast cell dysfunctions to induce miscarriage (abnormal early embryo loss), which might be generally regulated by lncRNAs. IL1B, a critical inflammatory cytokine, is closely associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, whether IL1B might cause dysfunctions of BaP/BPDE-exposed trophoblast cells to induce miscarriage, as well as its specific epigenetic regulatory mechanisms, is completely unexplored.
