Background: Automatic segmentation of meibomian glands in near-infrared meibography images is basis of morphological parameter analysis, which plays a crucial role in facilitating the diagnosis of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The special strip shape and the adhesion between glands make the automatic segmentation of meibomian glands very challenging.
Purpose: A strip and boundary detection multi-task learning network (SBD-MTLNet) based on encoder-decoder structure is proposed to realize the automatic segmentation of meibomian glands.
Second-generation biofuel production, which aims to convert lignocellulose to liquid transportation fuels, could be transformative in worldwide energy portfolios. A bottleneck impeding its large-scale deployment is conversion of the target polysaccharides in lignocellulose to their unit sugars for microbial fermentation to the desired fuels. Cellulose and hemicellulose, the two major polysaccharides in lignocellulose, are complex in nature, and their interactions with pectin and lignin further increase their recalcitrance to depolymerization.

Here, a facile approach of reconstruing apple pomace (AP) into edible bio-nanocomposite coatings of fresh-cutting apple slices was successfully developed through alkaline demethylation followed by high-pressure homogenization. The fibrillation of AP fibers is largely improved by -COO at a concentration of 1.

In this study, we constructed four modified walnut protein isolate (WNPI) based emulsions as emulsion-based delivery systems (EBDS) for lutein fortification. The modification treatments enhanced the encapsulation efficiency of the WNPI-based EBDS on lutein.

However, naturally evolved carotenoid cleavage oxygenase (CCO) with extreme catalytic conditions greatly limited the above pathway for vanillin bioproduction. Herein, CCO from (CCO) was rationally engineered for achieving high catalytic activity under neutral pH conditions and was further utilized for constructing a one-pot synthesis system of vanillin with ferulic acid decarboxylase.

SARS-CoV-2 evolves constantly with various novel mutations. Due to their enhanced infectivity, transmissibility and immune evasion, a comprehensive understanding of the association between these mutations and the respective functional changes is crucial. However, previous mutation studies of major SARS-CoV-2 variants remain limited.

Small noncoding RNAs (sncRNAs) play important regulatory roles in bacterial physiological processes and host-pathogen interactions. Meanwhile, bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), as naturally secreted outer membrane structures, play a vital role in the interaction between bacteria and their living environment, including the host environment. However, most current studies focus on the biological functions of sncRNAs in bacteria or hosts, while neglecting the roles and regulatory mechanisms of the OMVs that encapsulate these sncRNAs.

The existing vaccines are not ideal for preventing infection; thus, exploring highly effective adjuvants may improve the immunoprotective efficacy of vaccines. In a previous study, we found that the outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), a type of nanoscale particle spontaneously produced by Gram-negative bacteria, could act as adjuvants to boost the immune responses to vaccine antigens.

This study aimed to investigate how integrins facilitate the ACE2-mediated cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2. We first tested the susceptibility of a panel of human cell lines to SARS-CoV-2 infection using the spike protein pseudotyped virus assay and examined the expression levels of integrins in these cell lines by qPCR, western blot and flow cytometry.

Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is a known pathogenic factor of cervical cancer. To develop scientific guidance for cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination, we analyzed HPV genotypes in Suzhou City, China. This study utilized data from the cervical cancer screening project in Suzhou from 2016 to 2021.

In this study, a novel plant-based antioxidant emulsifier was developed using SPI and young apple polyphenols (YAP), and its underlying interaction mechanisms were discovered using multispectral technology and molecular docking. YAP physically bound to SPI through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, which significantly enhanced the free radicals scavenging, reducing, and metal ion chelating abilities of SPI by introducing free hydroxyl groups.

Background: More and more studies have investigated the association between maternal exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy and incidence of congenital heart defects (CHDs), but results are controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate whether maternal exposure to air pollutants (PM, PM, NO, CO, SO) are associated with an increased risk of congenital heart defects in Suzhou city, China.
Methods: Based on the birth defect monitoring system of Suzhou city and the Environmental Health Department of Suzhou CDC, the birth defect monitoring data and concentrations of five air pollutants (PM, PM, NO, CO, SO) in Suzhou city from 2015 to 2019 were obtained.
Previous studies of tomato rootstock effects on fruit quality have yielded mixed results, and few attempts have been made to systematically examine the association between rootstock characteristics and tomato fruit quality. In this study, grape tomato ('BHN 1022') and beefsteak tomato ('Skyway') were grafted onto four rootstocks ['Estamino' (vigorous and "generative"), 'DR0141TX' (vigorous and "vegetative"), 'RST-04-106-T' (uncharacterized), and 'SHIELD RZ F1 (61-802)' (mid-vigor, uncharacterized)] and compared to non-grafted scion controls for two growing seasons (Spring and Fall in Florida) in organically managed high tunnels. In both seasons and for both scions, the two vigorous rootstocks, regardless of their designation as "vegetative" ('DR0141TX') or "generative" ('Estamino'), exhibited negative impacts on dry matter content, soluble solids content (SSC), SSC/titratable acidity (TA), lycopene, and ascorbic acid contents.

Toward this end, we grafted two determinate-type scions [grape tomato ('BHN 1022') and beefsteak tomato ('Skyway')] onto four rootstocks with different characteristics to examine plant growth, yield performance, biomass production, and fruit mineral nutrient composition. The study was conducted during two growing seasons (spring and fall plantings in Florida) under organic production in high tunnels with the non-grafted scions as controls.

Here, we performed the single-cell B cell receptor sequencing (scBCR-seq) of the PBMC samples from eleven healthy controls, five asymptomatic subjects and 33 symptomatic COVID-19 patients with various clinical presentations, and subsequently analyzed the abundance and diversity of the BCR repertoires in different groups, respectively. We revealed the skewed usage of the IGHV, IGLV and IGKV genes and identified a number of heavy or light chain VDJ gene pairs and combinational preference in each group, such as IGKV3-7 and IGKV2-24 enriched in the asymptomatic subjects, whereas IGHV3-13, IGHV3-23-IGHJ4, IGHV1-18-IGLV3-19, IGHV1-18-IGLV3-21, and IGHV1-18-IGLV3-25 enriched in the recovery patients with severe diseases.
