Background: Automatic segmentation of meibomian glands in near-infrared meibography images is basis of morphological parameter analysis, which plays a crucial role in facilitating the diagnosis of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The special strip shape and the adhesion between glands make the automatic segmentation of meibomian glands very challenging.

Purpose: A strip and boundary detection multi-task learning network (SBD-MTLNet) based on encoder-decoder structure is proposed to realize the automatic segmentation of meibomian glands.

Second-generation biofuel production, which aims to convert lignocellulose to liquid transportation fuels, could be transformative in worldwide energy portfolios. A bottleneck impeding its large-scale deployment is conversion of the target polysaccharides in lignocellulose to their unit sugars for microbial fermentation to the desired fuels. Cellulose and hemicellulose, the two major polysaccharides in lignocellulose, are complex in nature, and their interactions with pectin and lignin further increase their recalcitrance to depolymerization.

Minimally processed fruits are increasingly demanded in modern society, but the management of perishable waste pomaces (WPs) and the products' short shelf-life are still big issues. Here, a facile approach of reconstruing apple pomace (AP) into edible bio-nanocomposite coatings of fresh-cutting apple slices was successfully developed through alkaline demethylation followed by high-pressure homogenization. The fibrillation of AP fibers is largely improved by -COO at a concentration of 1.

One-pot biosynthesis of vanillin from ferulic acid without providing energy and cofactors adds significant value to lignin waste streams. However, naturally evolved carotenoid cleavage oxygenase (CCO) with extreme catalytic conditions greatly limited the above pathway for vanillin bioproduction. Herein, CCO from (CCO) was rationally engineered for achieving high catalytic activity under neutral pH conditions and was further utilized for constructing a one-pot synthesis system of vanillin with ferulic acid decarboxylase.

  • Lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) is important for converting pyruvate and lactate, and its role in fighting liver cancer (HCC) is not well understood.
  • Researchers found that reduced LDHB levels in HCC are linked to DNA modifications, and restoring DNMT3A activity can increase LDHB expression in cancer cells.
  • Higher LDHB levels were associated with better immune responses and treatment outcomes in HCC patients, indicating that LDHB could serve as a potential biomarker and therapy target for improving immunotherapy responses.

Small noncoding RNAs (sncRNAs) play important regulatory roles in bacterial physiological processes and host-pathogen interactions. Meanwhile, bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), as naturally secreted outer membrane structures, play a vital role in the interaction between bacteria and their living environment, including the host environment. However, most current studies focus on the biological functions of sncRNAs in bacteria or hosts, while neglecting the roles and regulatory mechanisms of the OMVs that encapsulate these sncRNAs.

The widespread prevalence of () infection remains a great challenge to human health. The existing vaccines are not ideal for preventing infection; thus, exploring highly effective adjuvants may improve the immunoprotective efficacy of vaccines. In a previous study, we found that the outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), a type of nanoscale particle spontaneously produced by Gram-negative bacteria, could act as adjuvants to boost the immune responses to vaccine antigens.

Soy protein isolates (SPI) exhibit weaker emulsifying properties than those of animal proteins, thereby limiting their wide applicability. In this study, a novel plant-based antioxidant emulsifier was developed using SPI and young apple polyphenols (YAP), and its underlying interaction mechanisms were discovered using multispectral technology and molecular docking. YAP physically bound to SPI through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, which significantly enhanced the free radicals scavenging, reducing, and metal ion chelating abilities of SPI by introducing free hydroxyl groups.

Previous studies of tomato rootstock effects on fruit quality have yielded mixed results, and few attempts have been made to systematically examine the association between rootstock characteristics and tomato fruit quality. In this study, grape tomato ('BHN 1022') and beefsteak tomato ('Skyway') were grafted onto four rootstocks ['Estamino' (vigorous and "generative"), 'DR0141TX' (vigorous and "vegetative"), 'RST-04-106-T' (uncharacterized), and 'SHIELD RZ F1 (61-802)' (mid-vigor, uncharacterized)] and compared to non-grafted scion controls for two growing seasons (Spring and Fall in Florida) in organically managed high tunnels. In both seasons and for both scions, the two vigorous rootstocks, regardless of their designation as "vegetative" ('DR0141TX') or "generative" ('Estamino'), exhibited negative impacts on dry matter content, soluble solids content (SSC), SSC/titratable acidity (TA), lycopene, and ascorbic acid contents.
