Objective: : This study examines risk factors for persistent cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and examines whether human papillomavirus (HPV) testing predicts persistent lesions.

Materials And Methods: : Women with histologically diagnosed CIN 1 or CIN 2 (n = 206) were followed up every 3 months without treatment. Human papillomavirus genotyping, plasma levels of ascorbic acid, and red blood cell folate levels were obtained.

The simultaneous effects of cigarette smoking and oral contraceptives on serum estradiol and progesterone levels were investigated in 114 premenopausal women. Serum 17 beta-estradiol and progesterone levels were measured by radioimmunoassay. In smokers, estradiol and progesterone levels were significantly lower (p less than 0.

We have examined the effect of mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) on the secretion of rat transferrin (rTf) by Sertoli cells (SC) in the presence and absence of FSH. Significant decreases in rTf secretion were observed in SC cultures exposed to 50 and 75 microM MEHP, in the absence of FSH. Treatment of SC with FSH (300 ng/ml) obviated this suppression of rTf secretion by MEHP.

Using a highly sensitive method for the determination of red cell densities (Percoll-Stractan continuous isopyknic gradients), we find that, in adults, this parameter varies with sex and race. Whites have red cell densities (expressed as mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration [MCHC]) that are, on the average, 0.7 gm/dl higher than those in blacks (the difference of the means has p less than 2 x 10(-7].

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of the chemosterilant 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) on the rat testis. Adult male rats were fed control, or 0.1%, or 0.

In previous studies we demonstrated reduced fertility, arrested spermatogenesis, and diminished circulating testosterone levels in rats fed 0.03% 2,4-toluenediamine (TDA) for 10 wk. These studies were extended in three experiments by determining TDA effects on androgen-binding protein (rABP) production and on seminiferous tubule structure, and on early changes in testes morphology and spermatogenesis.

We screened 212 patients four to 12 weeks post partum for thyroid function: four patients (1.9%) had evidence of thyroid dysfunction; six patients (2.8%) had elevated antimicrosomal antibody titers.

In vitro thyroid function tests were performed on clinically euthyroid patients undergoing regular hemodialysis (HD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The mean serum total thyroxine (TT4) and total triiodothyronine (TT3) values measured before HD were significantly subnormal. Similarly, CAPD subjects had reduced TT3 concentrations with low normal TT4 levels.

The influence of progesterone and estradiol labeled with tritium was studied in mice inoculated with transplantable mammary adenocarcinomas C3HBA or BW 10232. Tumor size, tumor growth rate, and host survival were measured. Radioactive [3H]estradiol administration increased survival time and inhibited tumor growth in mice inoculated with these tumor lines.

The chronic effects of long-distance running upon the menstrual cycle were studied in a healthy, ovulatory 30-year-old woman. Luteal phase plasma concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, 17beta-estradiol, and progesterone were compared during a control and a training cycle. The luteal phase was shorter in cycles of greater mileage.

Stress or injury-induced phenomena, such as impaired wound healing and immune depression, may be related to impaired function of certain leukocyte populations. Since vitamin A prevents some aspects of stress, we studied its effect on various white cell populations in normal and injured rats. Supplemental vitamin A (150,000 IU/kg chow) to normal rats resulted in marked increases in thymic weight and lymphocytes without any effct on adrenal weight.

Cortisol concentrations in amniotic fluid and maternal plasma were determined by a competitive protein-binding assay in 14 patients in the midtrimester of pregnancy before and after intra-amniotic administration of prostaglandin F2alpha. Samples were obtained at three-hour intervals until abortion or until the fetal heartbeat ceased. The mean plasma levels of cortisol increased from 324 +/- 173 ng.

Progesterone concentrations in amniotic fluid and maternal plasma were determined in 11 midtrimester pregnant patients following the intraamniotic administration of prostaglandin F2alpha. Samples were obtained at 3-hour intervals until abortion or spontaneous rupture of membranes occurred or fetal heart tones disappeared. In amniotic fluid, the mean progesterone concentrations increased throughout the sampling period.
