Background: Oral contraceptives (OCs) may promote bone loss, thereby leading to suboptimal bone health later in life. Research is needed to determine whether dietary interventions can blunt OC-related bone loss; prune consumption, shown to be effective in improving bone density in previous studies, could provide a safe and inexpensive solution.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether 12 mo of consuming 50 g of prunes daily would prevent bone loss or increase bone accrual in young (18-25 y) OC users.
While much prior work has explored the constraints on protein sequence and evolution induced by physical protein-protein interactions, the sequence-level constraints emerging from non-binding functional interactions in metabolism remain unclear. To quantify how variation in the activity of one enzyme constrains the biochemical parameters and sequence of another, we focus on dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and thymidylate synthase (TYMS), a pair of enzymes catalyzing consecutive reactions in folate metabolism. We use deep mutational scanning to quantify the growth rate effect of 2696 DHFR single mutations in 3 TYMS backgrounds under conditions selected to emphasize biochemical epistasis.

In this study, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to assess accumulation, bioconcentration factors (BCFs), translocation factors (TFs), and removal rates of eight PFAAs by water hyacinth. The obtained results indicated that all PFAAs, including five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with chain lengths C4-C8 and three perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) with C4, C6, and C8, were readily accumulated in water hyacinth.

Many aspects of humans' dynamic decision-making (DDM) behaviors have been studied with computer-simulated games called microworlds. However, most microworlds only emphasize specific elements of DDM and are inflexible in generating a variety of environments and experimental designs. Moreover, despite the ubiquity of gridworld games for Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, only some tools exist to aid in the development of browser-based gridworld environments for studying the dynamics of human decision-making behavior.

While technology enhances individual capability in many ways, how do we know that the sociotechnical system as a whole, consisting of a complex web of hundreds of human-machine interactions, is exhibiting collective intelligence? Research on human-machine interactions has been conducted within different disciplinary silos, resulting in social science models that underestimate technology and vice versa. Bringing together these different perspectives and methods at this juncture is critical.

In general females show less sway than males, but this difference only begins to appear around puberty, pointing to different levels of sex hormones as one potential mechanism for sway sex differences. In this study, we followed cohorts of young females using oral contraceptives (n = 32) and not using oral contraceptives (n = 19), to investigate associations between estrogen availability and postural sway.

DNA methylation seems to be sufficiently stable epigenetic modification to be utilized as a cancer biomarker in in vitro diagnostic (IVD) settings. Nowadays, the SHOX2 methylation (mSHOX2) is one of the most valuable DNA methylation biomarkers of lung cancer that is the leading cause of cancer death.

Eight PFASs in wastewater from craft villages and industrial environments of Vietnam were analyzed using liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with negative electrospray ionization interface. For analysis of PFASs, percent recoveries ranged from 87 to 112, and MQL varied from 0.

For surface water, the average concentrations of five antibiotic classes decreased in the order: sulfonamides (117.9 ng/L) > -lactams (31.

Gene expression profiling was performed using microarray on 11 RNA samples (four controls, three hypersensitivity syndrome/drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, four Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis) followed by quantitative real-time PCR in a total of 11 SCARs patients and 11 controls. The biological pathways which were significantly enriched in differentially expressed genes in Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis compared with hypersensitivity syndrome/drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms patients included; cell surface interactions at the vascular wall, immunoregulatory interactions at the immunological synapse and MyD88 signaling pathways.

Functional hybrid materials were successfully synthesized from low-cost waste products, such as oligochitosan (OCS) obtained from chitosan (one of the main components in crab shells) and nanosilica (nSiO₂) obtained from rice husk, in a 1:1 ratio (/), and their dispersion in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose at pH 7 was stable for over one month without aggregation. The molecular weights, chemical structures, morphologies, and crystallinities of the obtained materials were characterized by GPC, FTIR, TEM, and XRD, respectively. The antifungal effects of OCS, nSiO₂, and the OCS/nSiO hybrid materials were investigated via a disk-diffusion method.

However, no obvious homologue of FIT2 is found in plants. Here, we tested the function of FIT2 in plant cells by ectopically expressing mouse (Mus musculus) FIT2 in Nicotiana tabacum suspension-cultured cells, Nicotiana benthamiana leaves and Arabidopsis thaliana plants.

The classical thiamin-requiring th2-1 mutation in Arabidopsis thaliana was shown to reduce ThDP levels by half and to increase ThMP levels 5-fold, implying that the THIAMIN REQUIRING2 (TH2) gene product could be a dedicated ThMP phosphatase. Genomic and transcriptomic data indicated that TH2 corresponds to At5g32470, encoding a HAD (haloacid dehalogenase) family phosphatase fused to a TenA (thiamin salvage) family protein.

Background: Efficient mechanisms for rejoining of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are vital because misrepair of such lesions leads to mutation, aneuploidy and loss of cell viability. DSB repair is mediated by proteins acting in two major pathways, called homologous recombination and nonhomologous end-joining. Repair efficiency is also modulated by other processes such as sister chromatid cohesion, nucleosome remodeling and DNA damage checkpoints.
