Microplastic hotspots mapped across the Southern Ocean reveal areas of potential ecological impact.

Marine microplastic is pervasive, polluting the remotest ecosystems including the Southern Ocean. Since this region is already undergoing climatic changes, the additional stress of microplastic pollution on the ecosystem should not be considered in isolation. We identify potential hotspot areas of ecological impact from a spatial overlap analysis of multiple data sets to understand where marine biota are likely to interact with local microplastic emissions (from ship traffic and human populations associated with scientific research and tourism).

"It's easy to be burned out in this line of work": Experiences of burnout among Black women pelvic floor therapists in the United States.

Background: Burnout disproportionately affects professionals who spend much of their time in direct patient care. The physical and emotional demands of pelvic floor therapists, coupled with identity-based stressors, may place Black women pelvic floor therapists at an increased risk for experiencing burnout.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of burnout among Black women pelvic floor therapists in the United States.

"It Felt Sexually Liberating": An Examination of How Black Women's Awareness of Kink and BDSM Informs Their Sex Lives.

Kink and BDSM can have healing and liberatory potential for practitioners, whether kink-identified or not, particularly Black women and those who are members of alternative sexual communities. This study presents data from  = 22 kink/BDSM-identified, experienced, and non-kinky/BDSM Black ciswomen on their awareness of and engagement in kink and BDSM (bondage and discipline, sadism and masochism, dominance, and submission). Qualitative data were from Phase Two of The Big Sex Study, a #HotGirlScience participatory action project.

Background/objectives: Intraoperative peripheral margin sampling in soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is a routine practice among musculoskeletal oncologists. Practice patterns are variable, and evidence to support it is lacking. Rates of peripheral margin sampling at our institution were analyzed in addition to its clinical utility and cost-effectiveness.

Visceral fat area and subcutaneous fat area as measures of body composition in soft tissue sarcoma.

Background And Objectives: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogenous group of malignancies of mesenchymal origin. Given recent data linking obesity as well as the pattern of fat distribution with cancer outcomes, we sought to investigate the association of visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) with oncologic outcomes in patients with STS undergoing surgery.

Methods: We analyzed data from 88 patients with STS diagnosed from 2008 to 2022.

Exploring southern Black women's sexual messaging is important for appropriately contextualizing their sexual experiences. This study advances the literature on southern Black women's sexuality by analyzing the valence, content, and sources of sexual messages using #HotGirlScience. Twenty-five Black women's semi-s tructured interview responses were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Genetic Screen in a Preclinical Model of Sarcoma Development Defines Drivers and Therapeutic Vulnerabilities.

Purpose: High-grade complex karyotype sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors with a uniformly poor prognosis. Within complex karyotype sarcomas, there are innumerable genetic changes but identifying those that are clinically relevant has been challenging.

Experimental Design: To address this, we utilized a pooled genetic screening approach, informed by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data, to identify key drivers and modifiers of sarcoma development that were validated in vivo.

Osteochondroma-like parosteal osteosarcoma: A case highlighting diagnostic challenge and surgical advances.

Parosteal osteosarcomas are uncommon malignant bone tumors that arise from the bone surface. Their heterogenous components can present challenges in diagnosis. We present a case of a rare variant of this tumor known as an osteochondroma-like parosteal osteosarcoma, which was initially misdiagnosed as a cartilaginous tumor on core needle biopsy.

Supportive care interventions in metastatic bone disease: scoping review.

Background: Patients with secondary metastatic involvement of the musculoskeletal system due to primary cancers are a rapidly growing population with significant risks for health-related end-of-life morbidities. In particular, bone metastases or metastatic bone disease (MBD) imparts significant adversity to remaining quality of life. No rigorous review of clinical trials on the use of supportive care interventions for MBD has been conducted.

There has been a long debate about the possibility of multiple contemporaneous species of Australopithecus in both eastern and southern Africa, potentially exhibiting different forms of bipedal locomotion. Here, we describe the previously unreported morphology of the os coxae in the 3.67 Ma Australopithecus prometheus StW 573 from Sterkfontein Member 2, comparing it with variation in ossa coxae in living humans and apes as well as other Plio-Pleistocene hominins.

"Make Sure You Wash Your Monkey": Multigenerational Vaginal Hygiene Messages from Black Women.

In the United States, the messages Black women receive about vaginal hygiene are often rooted in misogynoir. As a result, Black women across multiple generations may engage in extensive vaginal hygiene practices that are harmful to their health as a means of decreasing the potential for dehumanization or confirming racist stereotypes. The purpose of the current qualitative study is to explore the messages four generations of Black women ( = 12) received about genital hygiene and grooming and the sociocultural factors that influence these messages.

Potential resilience treatments for orangutans ( spp.): Lessons from a scoping review of interventions in humans and other animals.

Wild orangutans ( spp.) rescued from human-wildlife conflict must be adequately rehabilitated before being returned to the wild. It is essential that released orangutans are able to cope with stressful challenges such as food scarcity, navigating unfamiliar environments, and regaining independence from human support.

Receipt of Guideline-Concordant Care Is Associated With Improved Survival in Patients With Osteosarcoma in California: A Population-Based Analysis.

Purpose: To examine the relationship between guideline-concordant care (GCC) on the basis of national clinical practice guidelines and survival in children (0-14 years), adolescents and young adults (AYAs, 15-39 years), and adults (40 years and older) with osteosarcoma, and to identify sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with receipt of GCC and survival.

Methods: We used data from the California Cancer Registry (CCR) on patients diagnosed with osteosarcoma during 2004-2019, with detailed treatment information extracted from the CCR text fields, including chemotherapy regimens. Multivariable logistic and Cox proportional hazard regression were used for statistical analyses.

Purpose: Emerging evidence suggests that osteosarcoma stem cells (OSCs) may be responsible for tumor initiation propagation, recurrence, and resistance to therapy. We set out to evaluate the relationship between the abundance of ALDH1A1 and CD44-positive cells in biopsy and resection samples on disease recurrence and overall survival.

Methods: A retrospective review of 20 patients, including biopsy and resection samples, was performed at a comprehensive cancer center.

Correlates of Transactional Sex Among Black Men and Women Who Misuse Opioids.

The rise in opioid misuse coincides with increased sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV incidence. Transactional sex is an under-researched phenomenon among Black Americans who misuse opioids, and may increase their risk of STI or HIV transmission. Given the disproportionate impact of the opioid epidemic on Black Americans and the risks associated with opioid misuse, the current study aims to investigate sociostructural factors, history of violence, and sexual risk factors associated with transactional sex among Black men and women.

Minimizing the Environmental Impacts of Plastic Pollution through Ecodesign of Products with Low Environmental Persistence.

While plastic pollution threatens ecosystems and human health, the use of plastic products continues to increase. Limiting its harm requires design strategies for plastic products informed by the threats that plastics pose to the environment. Thus, we developed a sustainability metric for the ecodesign of plastic products with low environmental persistence and uncompromised performance.

Active surveillance of diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumors: A retrospective, multicenter cohort study.

Background: Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumor (D-TGCT) is a mono-articular, soft-tissue tumor. Although it can behave locally aggressively, D-TGCT is a non-malignant disease. This is the first study describing the natural course of D-TGCT and evaluating active surveillance as possible treatment strategy.

Emerging innovations and advancements in the treatment of extremity and truncal soft tissue sarcomas.

In this special edition update on soft tissue sarcomas (STS), we cover classifications, emerging technologies, prognostic tools, radiation schemas, and treatment disparities in extremity and truncal STS. We discuss the importance of enhancing local control and reducing complications, including the role of innovative imaging, surgical guidance, and hypofractionated radiation. We review advancements in systemic and immunotherapeutic treatments and introduce disparities seen in this vulnerable population that must be considered to improve overall patient care.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Psychological Correlates of Substance Use Disorders Among Black Sexual Minority Women.

This study examined the influence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on Black sexual minority women's mental health and substance use disorders in adulthood. Secondary data analysis was conducted using N = 149 Black sexual minority women's reports from the Generations Study. Study variables included psychological distress, chronic strains, stressful life events, ACEs, and substance use disorders, including alcohol use disorder and drug use disorder.
