Effect of central tachykinins, alone and with angiotensin II, on drinking in pigs and goats.

Central administration of the tachykinins, eledoisin or physalaemin has been reported to produce significant water intake in pigeons but inhibition of stimulated drinking in rats. In this paper it is shown that high and low doses of these two tachykinins injected centrally in two much larger species, goats and pigs, did not produce any significant drinking. Furthermore, in pigs, physalaemin, but not eledoisin, attenuated AII stimulated drinking (576 +/- 64 ml AII alone, versus 456 +/- 131 ml AII + eledoisin, not significant, and 124 +/- 89 ml AII plus physalaemin, p less than 0.

Astigmatic keratotomy: a review of basic concepts with case reports.

Despite the use of small incisions, better wound closure, and other technical improvements in cataract and corneal surgery, astigmatism remains a problem for the cataract and refractive surgeon. Case reports illustrate the applicability of astigmatic keratotomy in post-cataract and idiopathic astigmatism. The basic concepts of corneal relaxing incisions are reviewed and the frequently misunderstood coupling phenomenon is explained in the light of the "law of elastic domes.

Cerebral cortical calbindin D28K and parvalbumin neurones in Down's syndrome.

Anti-calbindin D28K (CaBP) and anti-parvalbumin (PVA) antibodies were used to study the number and size of neurones containing these two calcium binding proteins in post-mortem brains from 7 neurologically normal controls and from 4 elderly patients with clinically diagnosed Down's syndrome (DS) and whose brains contained numerous senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. The possible co-existence of these two calcium binding proteins in human cerebral cortex was also examined. In the controls, CaBP immunoreactive neurones were mainly non-pyramidal neurones although some pyramidal neurones were also CaBP immunoreactive.

Interaction of immune and connective tissue cells: I. The effect of lymphokines and monokines on fibroblast growth.

In order to determine if mononuclear cells may be secreting factors capable of modulating fibroblast growth, the in vitro proliferative response of fibroblasts to cytokines known to be secreted by mononuclear cells was measured, using both growth arrested and proliferating cells. Of the cytokines tested, which included interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-3 (IL-3), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), only TNF-alpha and PDGF had demonstrable growth factor activity. Neither IL-1 alpha nor beta showed any true growth factor activity but were able to enhance the replication of already proliferating cells.

Prediction of the secondary structure and functional sites of major histocompatibility complex molecules.

A method for the theoretical prediction of the antigenic determinants and the antigen-interactive receptor sites of immunological proteins from their primary structure would constitute a useful tool for their study. Such a method developed in this laboratory uses hydrophilicity, accessibility, flexibility, and recognition profiles, together with the predicted secondary structure (alpha-helices, beta-sheets, and turns). The secondary structure is determined by a modification of the method of Lim (1974), as described below.

An epidemic of Oroya fever in the Peruvian Andes.

Between February and October 1987, a febrile illness killed 14 persons and seriously affected at least 14 others in Shumpillan, a remote Peruvian mountain village of 353 people. The illness was characterized by fever, headache, chills, and pallor. The fatality rate of untreated cases was 88%.

Increasing the human menopausal gonadotropin dose--does the response really improve?

This study assesses the effects of attempts to optimize human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) dosage in 271 patients who had at least two hyperstimulation cycles for in vitro fertilization or gamete intrafallopian transfer. This study shows that modification of the hCG-oocyte retrieval interval from 34 1/2 hours to 37 hours in patients having IVF had no significant effect on the number or quality of oocytes retrieved or on the ultimate pregnancy rate. More consideration can therefore be given to other factors such as patient convenience when scheduling the timing of hCG administration.

Osmoregulation of vasopressin secretion in the insulin-withdrawn streptozotocin-treated diabetic rat.

A technique for complete oxytocinase inhibition has been combined with a rapid serial sampling strategy to determine the plasma oxytocin concentration in eight women undergoing amniotomy for the induction of labour at term and in eight control women. Amniotomy was not associated with an increase in plasma oxytocin concentration. Furthermore, the concentrations were not increased for 20 min following the procedure.

Six pony mares deprived of water for 24 hours showed significant increases in plasma vasopressin (2.8 pg/ml) and osmolality (9 mosmol/kg). When water was made available the ponies drank rapidly (5 of 6 drank to satiety within 90 seconds) and corrected their fluid deficits precisely.

Drinking and vasopressin release following central injections of angiotensin II in minipigs.

Plasma LVP concentration, measured by a specific radioimmunoassay, was decreased by drinking. At the end of the experiment the level was inversely proportional to the volume of water drunk in response to the AII, and not to changes in plasma osmolality.

Arginine vasopressin and oxytocin responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia in type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes.

In normal humans, arginine vasopressin and oxytocin are released acutely from the posterior pituitary gland in response to hypoglycemia, and their release may assist counterregulation. The responses of these hormones to insulin-induced hypoglycemia were measured in 16 insulin-dependent diabetic patients with no autonomic neuropathy (8 patients who had been diabetic less than 5 yr and 8 patients who had been diabetic greater than 15 yr) and in 6 normal subjects. The time of the onset of hypoglycemia and the mean blood glucose nadirs were similar in all groups, but the blood glucose recovery was delayed in the diabetic patients.
