Abnormalities of amount and function of presynaptic terminals may have an important role in the mechanism of illness in schizophrenia. The SNARE proteins (SNAP-25, syntaxin, and VAMP) are enriched in presynaptic terminals, where they interact to form a functional complex to facilitate vesicle fusion. SNARE protein amounts are altered in the cortical regions in schizophrenia, but studies of protein-protein interactions are limited.

A maximum length sequence (MLS) is a quasi-random sequence of clicks and silences that enables simultaneous recording of linear components and nonlinear temporal interaction components (NLTICs). NLTICs are produced when the stimulation rate is fast enough such that several stimuli occur within the memory length of the system. The present study was designed to characterise the NLTICs of auditory mid-latency responses (MLR).

Study Samples: Results from self samples by consenting patients who had called the NHS Direct telephone health line with cold or flu symptoms, or both, and results from Health Protection Agency (HPA) regional microbiology laboratories on patients tested according to the clinical algorithm for the management of suspected cases of swine flu.

The ecological validity of everyday cognition in hospitalized patients with serious mental illness.

In 47 tertiary inpatients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, we report on the extent to which everyday cognition (EC), as represented by tasks utilizing naturalistic stimuli or commonly encountered problems, accounts for variation in daily functioning. Patients underwent interview-based measures of psychiatric symptoms, nurses' observations of functioning, and measures of EC and traditional cognition (TC). Our results indicate that EC accounts for "real-world" functioning above that of TC and psychiatric symptoms.

Metal-organic frameworks impregnated with magnesium-decorated fullerenes for methane and hydrogen storage.

A new concept is described for methane and hydrogen storage materials involving the incorporation of magnesium-decorated fullerenes within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The system is modeled using a novel approach underpinned by surface potential energies developed from Lennard-Jones parameters. Impregnation of MOF pores with magnesium-decorated Mg(10)C(60) fullerenes, denoted as Mg-C(60)@MOF, places exposed metal sites with high heats of gas adsorption into intimate contact with large surface area MOF structures.

Sweeping Changes in Marriage, Cohabitation, and Childbearing in Central and Eastern Europe: New Insights from the Developmental Idealism Framework.

In Central and Eastern Europe following the political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s there were dramatic declines in marriage and childbearing, significant increases in nonmarital cohabitation and childbearing, and a movement from reliance on abortion to a reliance on contraception for fertility limitation. Although many explanations have been offered for these trends, we offer new explanations based on ideational influences and the intersection of these ideational influences with structural factors. We focus on the political, economic, social, and cultural histories of the region, with particular emphasis on how countries in the region have interacted with and been influenced by Western European and North American countries.

Effects of a siderophore receptor and porin proteins-based vaccination on fecal shedding of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in experimentally inoculated cattle.

The efficacy of a vaccine containing outer membrane siderophore receptor and porin (SRP) proteins for reducing fecal prevalence and shedding of Escherichia coli O157:H7 was evaluated in cattle inoculated with E. coli O157:H7. Thirty calves were randomly assigned to one of two groups, and on days 1 and 21 these calves were given subcutaneous injections of either a placebo (control) or the vaccine.

Study Objective: To determine if exposure to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) causes a defect in peripheral B-cell function among patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who are receiving zidovudine antiretroviral therapy.

Design: Prospective, single-center, single-group, case-crossover design with a 4-week exposure period.

Initial experience with catheter ablation using remote magnetic navigation in adults with complex congenital heart disease and in small children.

Background: The improved outcomes and increased availability of surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD) over the last three decades have created a small but steadily increasing subset of patients with unique needs: children and adults with complex arrhythmias in the setting of structural cardiac abnormalities. Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) in these patients, and in small children with normal cardiac anatomy, is effective but challenging. An understanding of specific anatomical and electrophysiological characteristics of these patients and the technical challenges in addressing them are critical to the success of this therapy.

The reaction of a sulfamate ester derived rhodium nitrenoid species with an alkyne produces a versatile intermediate, capable of cascading into a wide variety of secondary transformations. The nature of the intermediate has been probed by reactivity studies, and the synthetic utility of the cascade process, which facilitates the construction of complex heterocyclic structures from remarkably simple acyclic precursors, is highlighted.

Predictors of starting to smoke cigarettes in patients with first episode psychosis.

Introduction: Cigarette smoking is common in psychotic disorders and may be initiated in an attempt to control features of illness. However, genetic, obstetric and early life conditions are risks for starting to smoke in the general population but their role in psychotic patients is unclear.

Method: Smoking history and the putative predictors of starting to smoke were assessed in a community-wide sample of 115 first episode psychosis patients.

CD25high T cells with a prolonged survival inhibit development of diabetes.

The goal of this study is to examine a novel hypothesis that the progression of diabetes is partially due to the weakened survival of CD25high T cells, and prolonging survival of CD25high T cells inhibits the development of diabetes. Since CD28 co-stimulation is essential for the survival of CD4+CD25high T cells, we determined whether CD28-upregulated translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) prolongs the survival of CD4+CD25high regulatory T cells (Tregs) by a transgenic approach. The TCTP transgene prevents Tregs from undergoing apoptosis induced by interleukin-2 withdrawal-, dexamethasone-, cyclophosphamide-, and anti-Fas treatment in vitro.

The rise and fall of an arbitrary tradition: an experiment with wild meerkats.

Humans often follow the choices of others, even when profitable alternatives exist, leading to the maintenance of arbitrary traditions. Arbitrary traditions have also been shown to persist in captive groups of other animals, but it is unclear whether they do so in the wild where there are ample opportunities for exploring alternatives. We conducted the first experiment examining the maintenance of arbitrary traditions in wild mammal groups.

Situation of HIV infections and STIs in the United Kingdom in 2007.

In the United Kingdom (UK) in 2007, an estimated 77,400 persons were living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) of whom 28% are unaware of their infection. A total of 7,734 persons were newly diagnosed with HIV infection in 2007, of which 31% were diagnosed late. This highlights the need for wider HIV testing, especially in those areas with a high diagnosed prevalence, as recommended in recent national guidelines.

MG53 nucleates assembly of cell membrane repair machinery.

Dynamic membrane repair and remodelling is an elemental process that maintains cell integrity and mediates efficient cellular function. Here we report that MG53, a muscle-specific tripartite motif family protein (TRIM72), is a component of the sarcolemmal membrane-repair machinery. MG53 interacts with phosphatidylserine to associate with intracellular vesicles that traffic to and fuse with sarcolemmal membranes.

Specific blockade of VEGF and HER2 pathways results in greater growth inhibition of breast cancer xenografts that overexpress HER2.

We have previously reported that breast cancer cells which overexpress HER2 produce higher levels of VEGF than cells with low levels of HER2. This study tested the hypothesis that dual targeting of the VEGF (with VEGF-Trap) and HER2 (with trastuzumab) pathways would result in greater growth inhibition of HER2-overexpressing breast cancer xenografts than either agent alone. In this study we found that human and murine endothelial cells expressed high levels of VEGF receptors (VEGFR1, VEGFR2, & VEGFR3).

Cumulative concussion exposure in rugby players: neurocognitive and symptomatic outcomes.

A total of 111 rugby players underwent comprehensive testing to determine the impact of self-reported concussion exposure. Reliable estimates of concussion exposure were associated with an increase in postconcussion symptoms (PCS), but not diminished neurocognitive functioning. Importantly, the effects of concussion exposure on PCS varied as a function of player status.
