View Article and Find Full Text PDFStudy Objective: To report on the rate of amenorrhea among adolescents and young adults with a bleeding diathesis after insertion of the 52-mg levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) DESIGN: Retrospective chart review SETTING: Tertiary care, multidisciplinary Gynecology-Hematology clinic or Adolescent Gynecology clinic PARTICIPANTS: The cohort included 35 females aged 12-25 years presenting from January 2010 to January 2020 with heavy menstrual bleeding, 23 with an inherited blood disorder, and 12 with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome INTERVENTIONS: The 52-mg LNG-IUS MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome was bleeding profile after LNG-IUS insertion. Secondary outcomes included rates of amenorrhea, intrauterine device (IUD) expulsion, IUD discontinuation, and unplanned pregnancy.
Results: Mean age at menarche was 11.
Background: Emicizumab, a bispecific antibody factor VIII mimetic, is approved for prophylaxis in hemophilia, and has different risks and side effects compared to factor VIII products.
Objective: To better understand the early impact of emicizumab on our patients at the University of Colorado Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center (UCHTC), we evaluated adverse reactions, factor prophylaxis overlap, and bleeding rates after starting emicizumab through a quality improvement project.
Patients/methods: A retrospective chart review and structured phone interview were conducted from June to September 2019 for all patients who had started emicizumab at the UCHTC.
Background: There is need for validated outcome measures for postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) following pediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE), with a focus on quality of life (QoL).
Aims: This article assesses reliability and validity of two PTS and two QoL scales for children following lower extremity VTE.
Methods: Pediatric patients following lower extremity VTE were recruited from three thrombosis clinics.
Context: Preeclampsia and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) have been associated with perinatal brain injury. Despite a strong understanding of the relationships between preterm birth and neurologic deficits, and between PPROM and preeclampsia and preterm birth, the relationship between PPROM and preeclampsia and neurologic disability is not well characterized.
Objective: We compared trends in neurologic deficits in children born to mothers with these conditions and described differences in patient characteristics among follow up visit attendance.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To evaluate the impact of early disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) on illness severity in children using a database of emergency department ED encounters for children with suspected sepsis, in view of similar associations in adults.
Study Design: Laboratory and clinical data were extracted from a registry of emergency department encounters of children with suspected sepsis between April 1, 2012, and June 26, 2017. International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis DIC scores were calculated from laboratory values obtained within 24 hours of emergency department admission.
The Joint Outcome Study (JOS), a randomized controlled trial, demonstrated that children with severe hemophilia A (HA) initiating prophylactic factor VIII (FVIII) prior to age 2.5 years had reduced joint damage at age 6 years compared with those treated with episodic FVIII for bleeding. The Joint Outcome Continuation Study (JOS-C) evaluated early vs delayed prophylaxis effects on long-term joint health, following JOS participants to age 18 years in an observational, partially retrospective study.

These symbioses are enabled by specialized hemoglobins (Hbs) that are able to bind hydrogen sulfide for transportation to their chemosynthetic endosymbionts. Sulfur-binding capabilities are hypothesized to be due to cysteine residues at key positions in both vascular and coelomic Hbs, especially in the A2 and B2 chains.

To address this, we collected Aiptasia from 16 localities throughout the world and examined the genetic diversity of both anemones and their endosymbionts. Based on newly developed SCAR markers, Aiptasia consisted of two genetically distinct populations: one Aiptasia lineage from Florida and a second network of Aiptasia genotypes found at other localities.

We suggest that there are multiple such components differing in scalp topography, and that a larger frontal positivity often follows the larger N400 elicited by congruent but unexpected sentence endings as compared to predictable endings. We evaluated the lexical versus conceptual specificity of this post-N400-positivity.

To better understand how corals and their endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) respond to environmental change, tissue biomass and Symbiodinium density of seven coral species were measured on various reefs approximately every four months for up to thirteen years in the Upper Florida Keys, United States (1994-2007), eleven years in the Exuma Cays, Bahamas (1995-2006), and four years in Puerto Morelos, Mexico (2003-2007).
