Article Synopsis
  • Pig farms need a steady influx of replacement gilts due to high annual culling rates, with gilts usually reaching puberty around six months old.
  • Puberty in gilts can be induced through methods like early boar exposure and hormone therapies, while factors like age at first mating can impact the risk of reproductive issues.
  • To enhance long-term productivity, it's more efficient to select for litter size after two parities and to consider factors like uterine capacity and teat functionality when choosing future breeding females.

Treating lactating sows with chorionic gonadotropins may allow controlling their post-weaning reproductive function, despite the occurrence of anestrous during lactation. This article reviews the potential effectiveness of treatment with both equine and human chorionic gonadotropins (eCG and hCG, respectively) during lactation on the control of estrus expression and ovulation in weaned sows. The use of 1,000 IU hCG at 24 and 48 h postpartum may induce ovulation in the treated sows, but the ovulation rate may be variable.

Synchronized cyclicity of replacement gilts is crucial to optimize breeding herd management, however, protocols with oral progestogen are expensive and require daily administration. This study tested two synchronization protocols without progestogens during the luteal phase in gilts. In Experiment I, on the day of the expression of the third estrus (D0), gilts were assigned to three groups (n = 6, each): control, with no treatment; PGF25: in which gilts received two doses of hCG (1,500 IU each) on D12 and D15 and two doses of a prostaglandin F2α (PGF) analogue (sodium cloprostenol; 250 µg) 6-h apart, on D25; and PGF30: in which gilts received two doses of hCG (1,500 IU each) on D12 and D15 and two doses of the PGF analogue (sodium cloprostenol; 250 µg) 6-h apart, on D30.

Seed germination tests have been widely used in recent years to indicate the toxicity levels of samples of organic compounds, biosolids, residues and effluents. Lactuca sativa L, commonly known as lettuce, has been one of the main indicative species for these tests due to its high sensitivity to low levels of toxicity, when compared to other seeds and also because it is cultivated worldwide. Although this type of analysis or essay is being widely used, it is necessary to reflect on the various adaptations of methods used by different researchers worldwide.

This study evaluated the phytotoxic effects of raw and treated effluents from a swine slaughterhouse on cucumber and lettuce seeds and determined correlations among physicochemical characteristics of such effluents and the germination of seeds used as bioindicators. Physicochemical parameters were characterized for both effluents and their phytotoxicity was determined through the germination index (GI), the root length (RL) and the number of germinated seeds (SG) for both plant species. The effluents treatment system was efficient to reduce the concentration of some physicochemical parameters to levels within those recommended by the Brazilian legislation, except for P, ammoniacal N and TKN concentration.
