The nitrone compound OKN-007 delays motor neuron loss and disease progression in the G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Our study investigated the therapeutic potential of OKN-007 in the SOD1 G93A mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The impact of OKN-007, known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, was tested at two doses (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) at onset and late-stage disease. Results demonstrated a significant delay in disease progression at both doses, with treated mice showing a slower advance to early disease stages compared to untreated controls.

Characteristics associated with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) in giant cell arteritis (GCA).

Objective: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common vasculitis and can result in blindness due to anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). Little is known about which patients with GCA are at higher risk of AION.  We did a retrospective chart review to compare demographics, past medical history, labs and imaging of GCA patients with and without AION.

Resolution of dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and reversible left ventricular hypertrophy in 4 cats.

This case series describes spontaneous resolution of systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve, cessation of a dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and reverse cardiac remodeling in 4 young cats. Following initial presentation with or without congestive heart failure, subsequent rechecks documented resolution of systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve and normalization of left heart dimensions. Those cats originally presented with congestive heart failure were successfully weaned off diuretic medications.

Preventing Aerosol-Transmissible Diseases in Healthcare Settings: The Need for Protective Guidelines and Standards-Workshop Report.

There is an urgent need for stronger protection from aerosol-transmissible diseases in healthcare settings-for workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors. Concerned that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) lacks diversity in expertise and experience and has not consulted widely with all concerned parties regarding a planned update to the 2007 Guideline for Isolation Precautions, a workshop was developed to consider the science and lessons learned before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sponsored by the New York/New Jersey Occupational Safety and Health Center, was held on October 13, 2023, with these goals: describe current CDC/HICPAC infection prevention guidelines, review current scientific understanding of aerosol-transmissible pathogens, and consider perspectives from a wide range of groups currently excluded from the CDC HICPAC process.

On July 20, 2023 a letter was sent to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requesting the agency's Healthcare Infection Control Practice Advisory Committee seek input from more stakeholders and the public, recognize the importance of infectious disease transmission by inhalation of human-generated aerosols, and ensure the application of interventions from all levels of the control hierarchy.

Case report: Malignant chemodectoma with hepatic metastasis in a cat.

A 10-year-old, male-neutered, domestic short-hair cat was examined at the Veterinary Health Center Emergency Service at Kansas State University for a one-day history of dyspnea. Prior to thoracocentesis, sedation was provided. The cat stopped breathing after sedation and went into cardiac arrest.

Background: Culture can be used for diagnosis and antifungal susceptibility testing in animals with fungal infections. Limited information is available regarding the diagnostic performance of culture and the susceptibility patterns of Histoplasma spp. isolates.

Dairy cow hoof impact and slide measurements for common Ontario dairy farm floorings.

In the context of understanding lameness and injury from slipping, our objective was to characterize hoof impact and slide of 5 cows walking on 6 flooring surfaces commonly used in Ontario dairy farms: diamond-grooved concrete (DC), sanded epoxy-covered concrete (EC), grooved rubber mat (GR), high-profile rubber mat (HR), low-profile rubber mat (LR), and turf grass (TG; Kentucky bluegrass/fescue mix). Surface hardness was measured on each surface using a Clegg Impact Soil Tester. Five trained lactating Holstein cows were each walked over all 6 surfaces sequentially in a randomized order.

Hydrothermal Ageing of Glass Fibre Reinforced Vinyl Ester Composites: A Review.

The use of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites in load-carrying constructions has significantly increased over the last few decades. Such GFRP composite structures may undergo significant changes in performance as a consequence of long-term environmental exposure. Vinyl ester (VE) resins are a class of thermosetting polymers increasingly being used in such structural composites.

Over the past 50 years, although categorized as the "Information Age" or "Digital Age," the vast amounts of digitized data have been sorely underutilized. Only recently, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts have accelerated to harness these data using blockchain technology as it pertains to healthcare. Today, through the blockchain infrastructure and its tokenization applications, we are able to leverage healthcare data effectively into more efficient business processes.

Public Interest in COVID-19 Therapeutics for High-Risk Populations During the Omicron Era: A Google Trends Analysis.

Therapies for COVID-19 prevention or treatment continue to play a significant role for individuals who are not able to mount an adequate immune response after COVID-19 vaccination and/or in patients who are at high-risk for severe outcomes of COVID-19 infection. As these modalities have become more available, it is important to assess the public's interest in these agents to ensure both patients and physicians are aware of the therapeutics available to them. Google Trends is a freely available tool that researchers can use for monitoring public interest by analyzing trends in search queries during disease outbreaks.

A clinically utilized intravenous continuous rate infusion of diltiazem does not significantly decrease systolic function in healthy dogs.

Objective: To determine if left ventricular systolic function on echocardiography, systemic blood pressure, and electrocardiography change with a clinically accepted intravenous (IV) diltiazem constant rate infusion (CRI) compared to a control.

Animals: 10 healthy client-owned adult dogs.

Procedures: Prospective, masked, crossover study from May 27, 2021, to August 22, 2021.

Anticoagulant effects of rivaroxaban, prednisone, alone and in combination, in healthy dogs.

Background: The potential effects of glucocorticoid administration on rivaroxaban's anticoagulant bioactivity in dogs, and an appropriate rivaroxaban dosage regimen for dogs receiving glucocorticoid therapy are unknown.

Hypothesis/objectives: The objective was to determine whether glucocorticoid administration influences the anticoagulant effects of rivaroxaban in healthy dogs. We hypothesized that administration of rivaroxaban and prednisone would reduce the anticoagulant intensity compared with rivaroxaban alone.

Toceranib phosphate resolves right heart obstruction secondary to a heart base neoplasm in a dog.

An eight-year-old castrated male, 45 kg labrador retriever presented for evaluation of a two-week history of cough and tachypnoea. Echocardiography revealed an approximately 10 cm heart base mass, which extended to the right atrioventricular junction, causing compression of both the right atrium and ventricle resulting in right-sided congestive heart failure (abdominal effusion). Cytology of the mass was consistent with a neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Effects of an intravenous infusion of diltiazem on glomerular filtration rate, electrolyte excretion, and urine output in healthy dogs.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in dogs has a high case fatality rate. Diltiazem might improve renal function, but effect of intravenous infusion has not been adequately studied in dogs.

Hypothesis/objectives: To determine if an intravenous infusion of diltiazem improves renal function through changes in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), fractional excretion of sodium (FENa), and urine output (UOP) in healthy dogs.

Determinants of Cervical Cancer Screening Patterns Among Women With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Objective: Women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are vulnerable to cervical dysplasia due to the persistence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The objective of this cross-sectional retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence of cervical cancer screening according to the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) SLE-specific cervical cancer screening guidelines. We also aimed to identify SLE-specific determinants associated with ASCCP adherence.

Presumed congenital Gerbode defect in an American Domestic Shorthair cat.

A five-month-old, intact female Domestic Shorthair cat presented to the Kansas State Veterinary Health Center for evaluation of a murmur and exercise intolerance. Physical exam revealed a grade V/VI right, parasternal, holosystolic murmur. On echocardiogram, there was an abnormality in the membranous interventricular septum and tricuspid valve, allowing blood to shunt from the left ventricle to the right atrium.

Introduction/objectives: Minimal information exists regarding epicardial pacemaker (EP) implantation in pet ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). The objectives were to describe the indications, surgical technique, and outcome of EP implantation in ferrets for the treatment of advanced atrioventricular block (AVB).

Objective: The study objective was to assess sociodemographic disparities in telehealth use among patients in an urban adult rheumatology clinic during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patient-level sociodemographic data associated with all rheumatology visits in the following two periods were reviewed: pre-COVID-19 (March 1, 2019 to February 28, 2020) and COVID-19 (April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021). Data were extracted from the electronic health record.

Development of patient-centric eating advice for complete denture wearers.

Background: Edentulous people eat less healthily, and wearing dentures impairs eating function and enjoyment.

Objective: To apply a sequential approach to integrate scientific evidence, and patient and professional experience to co-develop intervention to support better eating with dentures.

Methods: Focus groups, two with purposive samples of patients and two with dental professionals, explored experiences and opinions about advice on eating with complete dentures.

Effect of washing units of canine red blood cells on storage lesions.

Background: In humans, washing stored blood products before transfusion reduces storage lesions and incidence of transfusion reactions, but the effectiveness of washing canine blood is unknown.

Objectives: The objective was to determine if manually washing units of stored blood would reduce storage lesions without adversely affecting erythrocytes. We hypothesized that washing stored units would reduce concentrations of storage lesions and cause minimal erythrocyte damage.
