We have identified the transmembrane collagen, COL-99, in a genetic screen for novel genes involved in axon guidance in the nematode C. elegans. COL-99 is similar to transmembrane collagens type XIII, XXIII and XXV in vertebrates.

Article Synopsis
  • Discoidin domain receptors (DDR-1 and DDR-2) in C. elegans play a crucial role in nervous system development, particularly in axon guidance.
  • Mutations in ddr-2 lead to significant defects in axon navigation, especially in the ventral nerve cord, while ddr-1 enhances these guidance issues when combined with ddr-2 mutations.
  • This study highlights the importance of DDR-1 and DDR-2 in establishing axon tracts and navigation, marking the first exploration of discoidin domain receptor functions in invertebrates.

This study was aimed to characterize the earliest phases of synapse development in mouse retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) by recording spontaneous postsynaptic currents (PSCs). First PSCs were detected at embryonic day 17 and completely suppressed by bicuculline, demonstrating their GABAergic nature. Starting from postnatal day 3 a small fraction of RGCs had rapidly decaying, most likely glutamatergic currents.
