Background: Outcomes may be improved by purposefully delaying surgical intervention of the traumatically ruptured descending thoracic aorta.

Methods: Fifty-seven patient records identified through the Trauma Registry of a level 1 trauma center between January 1993 and April 2002 were retrospectively analyzed between groups who underwent "clamp-and-sew" versus partial left heart bypass repair techniques and between emergent versus delayed repair.

Results: Thirty-two (56%) of 57 patients were male.

Two methods have been developed that enable the determination of estrogens down to 2 ng/g in digested and activated sludge from domestic sewage treatment plants (STPs) and down to 0.2 ng/g in freshwater sediments. The method for sludge analysis consists of solvent extraction; a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) cleanup step, a 1 g silica gel column; and finally, detection by GC-ion trap MS/MS of the silylated estrogens with MSTFA.

Pancoast (superior sulcus tumors) comprise a subset of non-small-cell lung cancers that have a unique clinical presentation by virtue of the locoregional pattern of disease progression. We herein report a brief report on our group's pilot experience in managing these challenging lung neoplasms with an aggressive concomitant modality approach. These results and those of the recent Southwest Oncology-lead Intergroup prospective phase 2 trial (SWOG-9416/INT-0160) support the use of concomitant chemoradiation followed by an attempt at surgical resection.
