Improving the microbiological diagnosis of fracture-related infection and prosthetic joint infection through culturing sonication fluid in Bactec blood culture bottles.

Background: Sonication of surgically removed implants appears to optimize the microbiological diagnosis in orthopedic implant-associated infections (OIAI). However, reports of infection with negative cultures can still reach high rates. A study evaluating the inoculation of sonication fluid into blood culture bottles (SFBCB) in patients with fracture-related infection (FRI) and prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is necessary.

Outcome and Predictors of Treatment Failure in Chronic Osteomyelitis Using Bioactive Glass Granules and Putty Formulations.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcome of patients with cavitary chronic osteomyelitis undergoing adjuvant treatment with bioactive glass (BAG) S53P4 and identify the independent risk factors (RFs) for recurrence in 6- and 12-month patient follow-up.

Methods: A retrospective, multicentre observational study conducted in tertiary specialised hospitals among patients undergoing the surgical treatment of chronic cavitary osteomyelitis using BAG-S53P4 in a granule and/or putty formulation to assess the clinical outcome and RFs for failure in 6- and 12-month patient follow-up.

Results: Of the 92 and 78 patients with 6-month and 12-month follow-ups, infection was eradicated in 85.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARVOVIRUS B19 AND OSTEOARTHRITIS: LITERATURE REVIEW.

Osteoarthritis and Parvovirus B19 infection present silent and gradual evolution, since the former is a degenerative process while the latter is often asymptomatic and may persist in the individual's body during their life. This study aims to analyze clinical studies that establish a correlation between degenerative osteoarthritis and Parvovirus B19 infection. Of the 62 studies found, 25 were chosen for reading in full.

Assessment of Predictors of Infection in Primary Knee and Hip Arthroplasty: A Case-control Study.

This study assesses risk factors for periprosthetic joint infection after elective primary total knee or hip arthroplasty.  The study included 706 medical records of patients undergoing elective primary total hip or knee arthroplasty from January to December 2018. We used a multivariate analysis of infection predictors through a logistic regression model.

MORTALITY IN PATIENTS > 90 YEARS OLD WITH PROXIMAL FEMORAL FRACTURES SUBJECTED TO SURGERY.

Introduction: Proximal femoral fractures have a high mortality rate among older adults, especially those aged > 80 years.

Objective: To analyze predictive factors for hospital or late mortality of patients > 90 years old who showed proximal femoral fracture and subjected to surgery.

Methods: The study included data from 230 patients aged > 90 years diagnosed with proximal femoral fracture and who underwent surgery between January and December 2017.

Double hindfoot arthrodesis using a single-incision medial approach in the correction of adult-acquired flatfoot deformity: a case series.

Background: Hindfoot arthrodesis is used in patients with advanced-stage acquired flatfoot, usually associated with degenerative joint disease. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of hindfoot arthrodesis using the single-incision medial approach.

Methods: A case series of 18 consecutive patients undergoing surgical correction between 2015 and 2018 with hindfoot arthrodesis using the medial approach was evaluated.

Intra-articular Infiltration of Platelet-Rich Plasma versus Hyaluronic Acid in Patients with Primary Knee Osteoarthritis: Preliminary Results from a Randomized .

 The present study aimed to compare the effects of intraarticular infiltration of platelet-rich plasma with those of hyaluronic acid infiltration in the treatment of patients with primary knee osteoarthritis.  A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 29 patients who received an intraarticular infiltration with hyaluronic acid (control group) or platelet-rich plasma. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the visual analog scale for pain and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire before and after the intervention.

Aerobic Exercise Protects from Pseudomonas aeruginosa-Induced Pneumonia in Elderly Mice.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PS) infection results in severe morbidity and mortality, especially in immune-deficient populations. Aerobic exercise (AE) modulates the immune system, but its effects on the outcomes of pulmonary PS infection in elderly mice are unknown.

Methods: BALB/c mice (24 weeks old) were randomized to sedentary, exercise (EX), PS, and PS + EX groups for the acute experimental setting, and PS and PS + EX groups for the chronic setting.
