Lithium-ion battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Lithium-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions including thermal abuse, mechanical abuse, and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion.

Background: The genetic and environmental aetiology of autistic and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) traits is known to vary spatially, but does this translate into variation in the association of specific common genetic variants?

Methods: We mapped associations between polygenic scores for autism and ADHD and their respective traits in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 4,255-6,165) across the area surrounding Bristol, UK, and compared them to maps of environments associated with the prevalence of autism and ADHD.

Results: Our results suggest genetic associations vary spatially, with consistent patterns for autistic traits across polygenic scores constructed at different p-value thresholds. Patterns for ADHD traits were more variable across thresholds.

Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal dominant familial cancer syndrome caused by germline mutations of the tumor protein p53 gene which encodes the p53 transcription factor, also known as the "guardian of the genome." The most common types of cancer found in families with LFS include sarcomas, leukemia, breast malignancies, brain tumors, and adrenocortical cancers. Osteosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma are the most common sarcomas.

Background: Observational studies have described associations of maternal smoking during pregnancy with intellectual disability (ID) in the exposed offspring. Whether these results reflect a causal effect or unmeasured confounding is still unclear.

Methods: Using a UK-based prospectively collected birth cohort (the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children) of 13,479 children born between 1991 and 1992, we assessed the relationship between maternal smoking at 18 weeks' gestation and offspring risk of ID, ascertained through multiple sources of linked information including primary care diagnoses and education records.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates isometric strength testing in sports science, hypothesizing that traditional tests measuring both peak force (PF) and rate of force development (RFD) may undermine the assessment of early RFD and its connection to vertical jump performance.
  • Researchers analyzed 47 participants using a standard isometric midthigh pull protocol and a specific RFD protocol, comparing their results to various jump performance measures.
  • Results indicated that the RFD-specific protocol yielded higher RFD values for quick time frames but lower PF, with weak to moderate correlations between jump performance and RFD/PF measures, regardless of the testing method used.

Article Synopsis
  • - Horses transformed human mobility, but the timeline of their domestication and integration as transport is debated, with new genetic data being used to clarify this history.
  • - Analysis of 475 ancient horse genomes indicates that modern domestic horses were shaped by human intervention around 2200 BCE, after a domestication bottleneck began around 2700 BCE, leading to a significant expansion across Eurasia.
  • - Evidence also suggests that there was early horse husbandry in central Asia at Botai around 3500 BCE, prior to the establishment of contemporary horse bloodlines, challenging the notion of large herds being linked to migrations around 3000 BCE.

Tick-borne infectious agents (TBIAs) include several bacteria and protozoa that can infect vertebrates, including humans. Some of these agents can cause important diseases from both a public health perspective, such as Lyme disease, and from an animal health and production viewpoint, such as Texas fever. In Chile, several studies have assessed the presence of tick-borne disease agents in vectors and mammal hosts, mainly in the northern regions, but few studies have assessed the presence of these agents in Central and Southern Chile.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a significant vascular disease found in 4% to 8% of the screening population. If ruptured, its mortality rate is between 75% and 90%, and it accounts for up to 5% of sudden deaths in the United States. Therefore, screening of AAA while asymptomatic has been a crucial portion of preventive health care worldwide.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) occur in 30% to 50% of patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Clinical presentations vary from asymptomatic disease to complications resulting from the right to left shunting of blood through the PAVM such as paradoxical stroke, brain abscesses, hypoxemia, and cardiac failure. Radiology plays an important role both in the diagnosis and treatment of PAVM.

Importance: Growing evidence associates air pollution exposure with various psychiatric disorders. However, the importance of early-life (eg, prenatal) air pollution exposure to mental health during youth is poorly understood, and few longitudinal studies have investigated the association of noise pollution with youth mental health.

Objectives: To examine the longitudinal associations of air and noise pollution exposure in pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence with psychotic experiences, depression, and anxiety in youths from ages 13 to 24 years.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how air and noise pollution exposure from pregnancy to age 12 affects mental health issues such as psychosis, depression, and anxiety in individuals at ages 12, 18, and 24.
  • - Data was collected from the Avon Longitudinal Study, tracking 14,000 children born in the early '90s, with factors like air quality measured alongside individual and family confounders included in the analysis.
  • - Results show that higher particulate matter exposure during pregnancy is linked to increased risks of psychosis and depression, while elevated nitrogen dioxide and noise pollution are associated with higher chances of anxiety, especially during childhood and adolescence.

Background: The study of parasites provides insight into intricate ecological relationships in ecosystem dynamics, food web structures, and evolution on multiple scales. Hepatozoon Eucoccidiorida: Hepatozoidae) is a genus of protozoan hemoparasites with heteroxenous life cycles that switch infections between vertebrates and blood-feeding invertebrates. The most comprehensive review of the genus was published 26 years ago, and currently there are no harmonized data on the epizootiology, diagnostics, genotyping methods, evolutionary relationships, and genetic diversity of Hepatozoon in the Americas.

Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photodissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, which affects planet formation within the disks. We report James Webb Space Telescope and Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the reaction between vibronically cold NO^{+} and O^{-} at a low collision energy of about 0.1 eV, focusing on single-collision interactions.
  • The reaction primarily results in the formation of three ground-state atomic fragments.
  • Using product-momentum analysis, the researchers propose a two-step mechanism where the anion donates an electron, leading to an intermediate Rydberg state of NO that eventually breaks apart.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the mutual neutralization reaction between hydronium (HO) and hydroxide (OH) ions, which is a basic yet not well-understood chemical process.
  • Using advanced imaging techniques in a cryogenic ion storage facility, researchers observed the products formed during these reactions at low collision energies.
  • The findings reveal that most of the reactions involve electron-transfer mechanisms, while some also involve proton transfer, helping to create a basis for future modeling of charge-transfer processes.
