Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker for bacterial sepsis, and accurate quantification of PCT is critical for sepsis diagnosis and treatment. Immunological PCT quantification methods are routinely used in clinical laboratories, yet there is a need for harmonization of PCT quantification protocols. An orthogonal method to clinical immunological assays, such as LC-MS/MS, is required.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a serious condition caused by an improper response to infection, and timely diagnosis using procalcitonin (PCT) is vital in healthcare.
  • The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry is working on standardizing PCT testing using a new reference method and high-quality materials to improve diagnostic accuracy.
  • The study found that magnetic-core nano-particles with specific antibodies are the most effective for isolating PCT, enhancing both its quantification and detection in clinical samples.
