Pulmonary embolism due to hydatid cysts is a very rare pathology. A 55-year-old male was transferred to our hospital due to respiratory failure, as a result of left pulmonary artery obstruction by cystic lesions. His medical history included multiple operations for abdominal echinococcosis.

Background: Pulmonary metastases develop in 10-15% of patients with colorectal cancer. Surgical metastasectomy currently provides the only hope for a cure for these patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the expanding role of pulmonary metastasectomy in the context of laser-assisted surgery (LAS) non-laser-assisted surgery (NLAS).

The prognosis of metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is poor, and platinum-based chemotherapy improves the median survival for only a few months. A subgroup of patients with oligometastatic disease may benefit from surgical resection, but only very limited data are available to date. We conducted a retrospective review of all patients with synchronous extrapulmonary oligometastatic NSCLC undergoing surgical resection in our department.

Background: The effect of pleurectomy/decortication or extrapleural pleuropneumonectomy on pulmonary function has not yet been evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the parameters of pulmonary function before and after pleurectomy/decortication or extrapleural pleuropneumonectomy.

Methods: We conducted a review of 48 patients with unilateral malignant pleural mesothelioma who underwent pleurectomy/decortication or extrapleural pleuropneumonectomy.

Background: Previous studies revealed that surgical lung biopsy in usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) patients is accompanied with higher morbidity and mortality. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to assess morbidity and mortality of patients with suspected UIP undergoing surgical lung biopsy.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 45 patients with suspected UIP pattern undergoing surgical biopsy for diffuse pulmonary infiltrates in our department.

Objectives: Since the introduction of video-assisted lobectomy for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) into clinical practice, it has been discussed controversially whether mediastinal lymphadenectomy can be performed as effectively as an open procedure via thoracotomy. Therefore, we address this issue in a prospective randomized trial conducted in our institution.

Methods: In total, 66 patients with completely staged clinical Stage I NSCLC were included and randomized either into a video-assisted group (n = 34) or into the conventional lobectomy group (n = 32).

Background: Chemotherapy with radiation has to be considered the standard therapy for limited-stage small cell lung cancer but surgical resection is possible in a small subgroup in which it may improve survival. Surgery is not recommended as the standard treatment, but a few small studies have demonstrated a benefit of surgery in highly selected cases of limited-stage small cell lung cancer.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 29 patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer undergoing surgical resection in our department.

Purpose: Abdominal hernia repair using the intraperitoneal implantation of a prosthesis requires mesh with impervious properties, such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). A newly developed polyurethane-covered polyester mesh with impervious properties has recently been introduced as a less expensive alternative to PTFE, and we compare these materials herein.

Methods: The adhesion formation and stability of intraperitoneal abdominal hernia repairs with DualMesh (macroporous ePTFE mesh with a microporous component) and PolyesterComposite (the newly developed polyurethane-covered Dacron mesh) were compared in a rat model.
