The mechanisms that underpin the formation, growth and composition of otoliths, the biomineralized stones in the inner ear of fish, are largely unknown, as only a few fish inner ear proteins have been reported. Using a partial transcriptome for the inner ear of black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri), in conjunction with proteomic data, we discovered hundreds of previously unknown proteins in the otolith. This allowed us to develop hypotheses to explain the mechanisms of inorganic material supply and daily formation of growth bands.

Among the outstanding chemical diversity found in marine sponges, cyclic guanidine alkaloids, present in species of the family Crambeidae, are particularly attractive, not only because of their unique chemical features, but also due to a broad range of biological activities. Despite a growing interest in these natural products as therapeutic agents, their metabolic pathway has not been experimentally investigated. Ex situ feeding experiments using radiolabeled precursors performed on the Mediterranean sponge Crambe crambe suggest arginine and fatty acids as precursors in the metabolic pathway of crambescins.

The effect of surface chemistry on the adsorption characteristics of a fibronectin fragment (FNIII) was investigated using fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Model surfaces were constructed to replicate self-assembled monolayers terminated with methyl, hydroxyl, amine, and carboxyl moieties. It was found that adsorption of FNIII on charged surfaces is rapid, specific, and driven by electrostatic interactions, and that the anchoring residues are either polar uncharged or of opposing charge to that of the targeted surfaces.

The development of a simple pH-stat fed-batch fermentation strategy for the production of Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR-1 and magnetosomes (nanoscale magnetic organelles with biotechnological applications) is described. Flow cytometry was exploited as a powerful analytical tool for process development, enabling rapid monitoring of cell morphology, physiology and polyhydroxyalkanoate production.   • Bioassays showed that the cell-free metabolites from O. cf. ovata negatively impact the photosynthetic activity of diatoms, but co-culture experiments suggest that direct contact is needed for these effects to occur.
  • Interestingly, L. paradoxa's exometabolome also exhibits harmful effects on O. cf. ovata, indicating a complex interaction between these species, with potential involvement of oxylipins or bacterial sources of bioactive metabolites.

Zoantharians represent a group of marine invertebrates widely distributed from shallow waters to the deep sea. Despite a high diversity and abundance in the rocky reefs of the Pacific Ocean, very few studies have been reported on the diversity of this group in the Tropical Eastern Pacific coasts.
