Autonomous methods to align beamlines can decrease the amount of time spent on diagnostics, and also uncover better global optima leading to better beam quality. The alignment of these beamlines is a high-dimensional expensive-to-sample optimization problem involving the simultaneous treatment of many optical elements with correlated and nonlinear dynamics. Bayesian optimization is a strategy of efficient global optimization that has proved successful in similar regimes in a wide variety of beamline alignment applications, though it has typically been implemented for particular beamlines and optimization tasks.

Childhood dementias are a group of rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorders, characterised by global cognitive decline, loss of previously acquired developmental skills and behaviours and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Batten disease, or neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, and Sanfilippo syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis type III, are two of the more common forms of childhood dementia disorders worldwide. While psychosocial interventions are the best available therapeutic approach for BPSD management in adult-onset dementia, there is very limited literature or clinical experience in the context of childhood dementia.

Pain recognition for culturally diverse people is complex as pain experience is subjective and influenced by cultural background. We compared the prevalence, intensity, and association of pain with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) between immigrants and non-immigrants living with dementia in residential aged care homes (RACHs) who were referred to two Dementia Support Australia programs. Immigrant status was defined by the documented country of birth.

Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia such as agitation and aggression are common in people living with dementia. The presentation of neuropsychiatric symptoms is influenced by the cultural background of people living with dementia. Further, identifying factors contributing to neuropsychiatric symptoms may be complicated if people living with dementia are immigrants or from non-English-speaking backgrounds.

Research assessing exercise-induced hypohydration on running performance in a temperate environment is scarce. Given the weight-bearing nature of running, the negative effects of hypohydration might be offset by the weight-loss associated with a negative fluid balance. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of exercise-induced hypohydration on running performance in temperate conditions.

  • This study evaluated how food and the acid-reducing agent rabeprazole affect the pharmacokinetics and safety of capivasertib, an AKT inhibitor being developed for cancer treatment, through a two-part trial involving healthy participants.
  • In Part 1, participants received capivasertib after fasting or with different meal types, including a high-fat meal, and blood samples were analyzed for drug exposure.
  • Results showed that food intake, particularly high-fat meals, increased drug exposure temporarily, but overall, food and rabeprazole did not significantly alter the drug's pharmacokinetics or safety compared to fasting conditions.

Diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism requires measurement of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the context of the plasma calcium and other factors, such as vitamin D status and renal function. Accurate classification depends upon an appropriate population reference interval. We examined local population plasma PTH reference intervals at four different UK sites using a common platform.

The late-season Corn Stalk Nitrate Test (CSNT) is a well-known tool to help evaluate the after-the-fact performance of nitrogen management. The CSNT has the unique ability to distinguish between optimal and excessive corn nitrogen status, which makes it helpful for identifying the over-application of N so that farmers can adjust their future nitrogen decisions. This paper presents a multi-year and multi-location dataset of late-season corn stalk nitrate test measurements across the US Midwest from 2006 to 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the addition of capivasertib, an AKT inhibitor, to standard abiraterone acetate therapy for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer to combat therapy resistance.
  • In a group of 27 patients, the treatment was well-tolerated, with common side effects including diarrhea, anemia, and asthenia, but no severe dose-limiting toxicities were reported.
  • About 33% of participants experienced a significant reduction (20% or more) in prostate-specific antigen levels, suggesting potential clinical benefits and supporting further research on this combination therapy.

Further and continuing education is not only important for individual employability, but also for regional development. Therefore, improving participation in further and continuing education and removing barriers to participation are key concerns of regional education governance. The present study was conducted in a peripheral region of Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany, where the annual participation rate in continuing education is relatively low compared to other geographic areas in Germany.

Access to high-quality and safe evidence-based palliative care (PC) is important to ensure good end-of-life care for older people in residential aged care homes (RACHs). However, many barriers to providing PC in RACHs are frequently cited. The Quality End-of-Life Care (QEoLC) Project was a multicomponent intervention that included training, evidence-based tools and tele-mentoring, aiming to equip healthcare professionals and careworkers in RACHs with knowledge, skills and confidence in providing PC to residents.

Background: Treatments for symptomatic or unstable basilar invagination (BI) include posterior decompression, distraction/fusion, trans-nasal or trans-oral anterior decompression, and combined techniques, with the need for occipitocervical fusion based on the degree of craniocervical instability. Variations of the far lateral transcondylar approach are described in limited case series for BI, but have not been widely applied.

Methods: A single-institution, retrospective review of consecutive patients undergoing a far lateral transcondylar approach for odontoidectomy (± resection of the inferior clivus) followed by occipitocervical fusion over a 6-year period (1/1/2016 to 12/31/2021) is performed.

Neonatal congenital hypothyroidism screening is performed by measuring thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in a dried blood spot (DBS) sample, whereas acquired hypothyroidism uses serum TSH. There is no established DBS TSH reference interval, but knowing this is useful, as some patients cannot tolerate venepuncture, so DBS collection is seen as an acceptable alternative. The aim of this study was to establish DBS TSH reference intervals in adults and neonates (day 5-8), and determine the relationship between serum and DBS TSH.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on the quality of life of aged care residents living with dementia (RLWD). Lockdown measures necessary to protect RLWD and caring staff from COVID-19 have resulted in increased social isolation, loneliness, and behaviors and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). In response, the Australian Government funded a pilot program, the Dementia Engagement Modelling Program (DEMP) as part of the Aged Care COVID-19 Grief and Trauma support package for RLWD, their families and aged care staff.
