The United States Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 set a precedent for biodiversity conservation across the globe. A key requirement of protections afforded by the ESA is the accurate delimitation of imperiled species. We present a comparative reference-based taxonomic approach to species delimitation that integrates genomic and morphological data for objectively assessing the distinctiveness of species targeted for protection by governmental agencies.

With the growth of the equestrian industry, risk exposure and the obligation to maintain the health, safety, and welfare of humans and horses remain front and centre. As there has been no apparent reduction in non-fatal human horse-related injuries, we asked industry stakeholders to discuss their current management and risk mitigation practices and highlight potential barriers to improving these processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 stakeholders from Australian equestrian work- ( = 9) and non-work- ( = 11) related organisations to determine the potential benefits and feasibility of adopting an industry-specific health, safety, and welfare (HSW) management system.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lethal disease with substantial unmet medical needs. While aberrant epithelial remodeling is a key factor in IPF progression, the molecular mechanisms behind this process remain elusive. Harnessing a 3D patient-derived organoid model and multi-omics approach, the first inventory of the connection between metabolic alteration, chromatin accessibility, and transcriptional regulation in IPF aberrant epithelial remodeling is provided.

Subtle changes in behaviour, which may be useful as early indicators of disease or stress in farm animals, can be detected using precision livestock technologies. However, as animals often display differences in their baseline behaviours from one another, individual variation needs to be measured and accounted for if we want to successfully detect abnormalities. In addition to consistent individual differences in their mean behaviour, which are called behavioural types and measured by repeatability, animals may differ in the amount of day-to-day variation around their own mean.

  • Intercellular mitochondrial transfer from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to chondrocytes may enhance tissue healing and has potential for treating osteoarthritis, but the mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • The study aimed to investigate the role of connexin 43 (Cx43) in this transfer, especially under oxidative stress conditions, and tested hypotheses about increased mitochondrial transfer and the influence of Cx43 expression.
  • Results indicated that oxidative stress in chondrocytes promoted mitochondrial transfer from MSCs, which was significantly enhanced by direct cell contact, with evidence showing Cx43 localizing at these contact sites.

This study investigated a straightforward treatment planning technique for definitive stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for patients with early-stage lung cancer aimed at increasing dose to gross disease by strategically penalizing the normal tissue objective (NTO) in the Eclipse treatment planning system. Twenty-five SBRT cases were replanned to 50 Gy in 5 fractions using static and dynamic NTO methods (50 plans total). The NTO had a start dose of 100% at the target border, end dose of 20%, fall-off rate of 0.

  • Airway management is vital in treating out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), focusing on whether tracheal intubation (TI) or supraglottic airway devices (SGA) lead to better patient outcomes.
  • A secondary analysis of the TTM2 trial included 1702 adult OHCA patients and found that most (71.6%) received TI, while 28.4% were managed with SGA.
  • Results indicated that the type of airway management did not significantly affect outcomes like ventilator-free days, neurological status, or mortality rates after 26 days.

Despite advancements in antifibrotic therapy, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) remains a medical condition with unmet needs. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has enhanced our understanding of IPF but lacks the cellular tissue context and gene expression localization that spatial transcriptomics provides. To bridge this gap, we profiled IPF and control patient lung tissue using spatial transcriptomics, integrating the data with an IPF scRNA-seq atlas.

Respiratory effort is considered important in the context of the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), as well as other sleep disorders. However, current monitoring techniques can be obtrusive and interfere with a patient's natural sleep. This study examines the reliability of an unobtrusive tracheal sound-based approach to monitor respiratory effort in the context of OSA, using manually marked respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) signals as a gold standard for validation.
