Calcined mixed clays are one of the most promising alternative supplementary cementitious materials. However, their standardized use is difficult due to the wide range of compositions of the raw materials. The reactivity potential of different clays can hardly be estimated on the basis of simple characteristics so far.

Many methods have been proposed to analyse SEM-EDS hypermaps of hydrated cementitious materials but none can fit all purposes. In this presentation, we review existing methods for phase identification, stoichiometry quantification, and microstructure quantification in cementitious materials and related materials. We first discuss the unique contribution of SEM-EDS with respect to the outstanding scientific challenges towards sustainable construction materials.

A promising process for the automatization of concrete structures is extrusion or extrusion molding. An innovative approach is the extrusion of concrete with imbedded technical textiles as reinforcement. For a successful extrusion, the rheological properties of the fresh concrete have to be optimized, as it must be extrudable and have sufficient early strength after leaving the mouthpiece.

The objective of this study is an investigation of the different parameters that influence the tensile strength of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Apart from the shrinkage and stiffness, the tensile strength is an important parameter for the design of crack-free concrete elements, e.g.

This paper presents a systematic study of the electrical resistivity of different steel fibre-reinforced concretes with fibre contents from 0 kg/m to 80 kg/m in order to identify possible effects of interactions among concrete composition and fibre type and content regarding electrical resistivity. Based on a literature review, four parameters, w/c ratio, binder content, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and fineness of cement, which show a significant influence on the electrical resistivity of plain concrete, were identified, and their influence on the electrical resistivity as well as interaction effects were investigated. The results of the experiments highlight that the addition of fibres leads to a significant decrease in electrical resistivity, independent of all additional parameters of the concrete composition.

Possible threats on the environment and human health by the leaching of new building materials and composites in contact to water should be prevented from the outset. It is therefore necessary to assess and ensure their environmental compatibility. For irrigated construction elements this is a challenging task, as there is no general correlation between known testing methods and outdoor emissions.
