Introduction: The global COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of protecting frontline healthcare workers from novel respiratory infections while also exposing the limited instruction that medical students receive on proper donning of personal protective equipment (PPE) and more importantly the safe doffing of contaminated PPE to minimize their risk of nosocomial infection. The best methods of providing this kind of instruction have not yet been determined.
Methods: Anesthesiology interns and CA-1 residents were trained on proper PPE donning and doffing for AGPs using a methodology based on Miller's pyramid and following a "knows-knows how-shows-does" progression.
Background: Exposure of respiratory therapists (RTs) during aerosol-generating procedures such as endotracheal intubation is an occupational hazard. Depending on the hospital, RTs may serve as laryngoscopist or in a role providing ventilation support and initiating mechanical ventilation. Methods: Multidisciplinary healthcare providers responded to critical simulated patients in an urban ED during all shifts. Unannounced in situ simulations were limited to 10 min of simulation and 10 min of debriefing, and were video recorded.
Background: Cincinnati Children's Hospital is one of the busiest paediatric emergency departments (ED) in the USA; high volume, high acuity and frequent interruptions contribute to an increased risk for error.
Objective: To improve patient safety in a paediatric ED by implementing a multidisciplinary, simulation-based curriculum emphasising teamwork and communication.
Methods: Subjects included all healthcare providers in the ED.
Radiology education has evolved significantly in the past several decades, but there is considerable room for improvement. While some improvements depend on the availability of new technology, others are low tech, requiring merely that we be aware of and apply findings in the education literature. We teachers of radiology could benefit from recent studies investigating the processes underlying adult learning to improve the methods we use to train residents and fellows, and to improve the way we teach our colleagues and even ourselves.
