Political organization and gender predict violence in the Andean archaeological record.

The relationship between sociopolitical organization and violence remains an enduring question in anthropological research. Less studied is the articulation of gender with violence in societies of different sociopolitical organization. We investigate the frequency and type of violence experienced by adult males and females in pre-Hispanic Andean archaeological contexts, comparing exposure to antemortem (nonlethal) and perimortem (potentially lethal) violence across three categories of sociopolitical organization: autonomous communities, regional cultural formations, and states.

Unstructured satellite survey detects up to 20% of archaeological sites in coastal valleys of southern Peru.

Satellite survey is widely used for archaeological site discovery, but the efficacy of the method has received little systematic investigation. In this analysis, twelve study participants of different experience levels performed an unstructured remote survey of 197 km2 in the Sama and Moquegua valleys of south central Peru where previous pedestrian surveys recorded 546 archaeological sites. Results indicate an average site discovery rate of 9.

Correlations between Limbic White Matter and Cognitive Function in Temporal-Lobe Epilepsy, Preliminary Findings.

The limbic system is presumed to have a central role in cognitive performance, in particular memory. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between limbic white matter microstructure and neuropsychological function in temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Twenty-one adult TLE patients, including 7 non-lesional (nlTLE) and 14 with unilateral mesial temporal sclerosis (uTLE), were studied with both DTI and hippocampal T2 relaxometry.

Intelligence quotient is not affected by epilepsy surgery in childhood.

Epilepsy surgery is known to help children with intractable seizures. The effect of epilepsy surgery itself on cognition in childhood is less well studied. We report our experience at the University of Alberta Hospital on the effects of epilepsy surgery on cognition.

Pearls & Oy-sters: selective postictal aphasia: cerebral language organization in bilingual patients.

Background: Ictal and postictal language dysfunction is common and strongly predictive of language laterality in monolingual patients. For bilingual patients, selective dysfunction has been reported for a single language with focal cerebral lesions, electrical brain stimulation, and intracarotid sodium amytal.

Methods: Two right-handed Ukrainian-English bilingual patients with left perisylvian structural lesions, late onset complex-partial seizures, and postictal aphasia for English are presented and discussed with regard to mechanisms of selective aphasia and factors contributory to language lateralization in bilingual patients.

Corticosteroids for the treatment of Landau-kleffner syndrome and continuous spike-wave discharge during sleep.

Landau-Kleffner syndrome and its variants such as continuous Spike-Wave Discharge during Sleep (CSWS) are progressive epileptic encephalopathies of childhood. The treatment of this unusual group of patients is controversial. We describe our experience in treating patients with Landau-Kleffner syndrome and CSWS with corticosteroids.

Pediatric epilepsy surgery at the University of Alberta: 1988-2000.

Epilepsy surgery is considered a treatment option for patients with intractable seizures. Relatively few studies of efficacy, safety, and long-term outcome are available for the pediatric age group. This study describes a 12-year experience with pediatric epilepsy surgery at the University of Alberta.
