Article Synopsis
  • The study explores strategies to reduce the risk of sepsis from transrectal prostate biopsies (TRUSBx), including the use of targeted antibiotics and switching to a freehand transperineal approach (FHTPBx).
  • Out of 1501 patients, 23 experienced post-biopsy sepsis, with a significantly lower rate in the FHTPBx group (0.4%) compared to those undergoing TRUSBx with either empirical or targeted antibiotics (2.0% and 2.2%, respectively).
  • The findings conclude that targeted antibiotics did not effectively lower sepsis rates, while using FHTPBx significantly decreased the risk, leading to a recommendation for FHTPBx as the safer option for all patients.
