Article Synopsis
  • - The SOX transcription factor family plays a key role in development, and researchers conducted a study using extensive genetic data to explore relationships between SOX protein variants and clinical conditions.
  • - They identified 27 amino acid changes within the HMG-box of SOX proteins linked to various clinical pathologies, including a novel mutation in SOX15 associated with muscle abnormalities and SOX8 linked to intellectual disabilities.
  • - The study also discovered numerous conserved variants in other regions of SOX genes, with associations to conditions like seizures, cardiovascular issues, and eyesight problems, enhancing understanding of genotype-to-phenotype connections in this important gene family.

Telegenetics-genetic counseling via live videoconferencing-can improve access to cancer genetic counseling (CGC) in underserved areas, but studies on cancer telegenetics have not applied randomized methodology or assessed cost. We report cost, patient satisfaction and CGC attendance from a randomized trial comparing telegenetics with in-person CGC among individuals referred to CGC in four rural oncology clinics. Participants (n = 162) were randomized to receive CGC at their local oncology clinic in-person or via telegenetics.

The nests of some mound-building ants are thought to serve an important function as passive solar collectors. To test this hypothesis, imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren, S. richteri Forel, and their hybrid) mound shape characteristics (south facing slope angle and area, mound height, and basal elongation in the plane of the ground) were quantified in 2005 and 2006 at a number of locations from approximately 30 degrees 25' N (Long Beach, MS) to 35 degrees 3' N (Fayetteville, TN).
