Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted in a French university hospital investigated the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic children who were routinely screened before surgery during the pandemic.
  • The retrospective analysis included 816 test samples, revealing a low prevalence of 0.49% positivity, with half of the positive cases linked to close contacts with adults who were infected.
  • The findings suggest that asymptomatic children had a low rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection during the initial phases of the pandemic in France.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can lead to a variety of neurological disorders. While HEV RNA is known to be present in the central nervous system, HEV quasispecies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have rarely been explored. We studied the virus' quasispecies in the blood and the CSF of five patients at the onset of their neurological symptoms.

This was a monocentric prospective study testing the efficacy and safety of a first injection of BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) in 112 Allo-HSCT patients. Antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain was tested at the time of the second injection (Roche Elecsys). The study also included a non-randomized control arm of 26 healthy controls.

Article Synopsis
  • The FilmArray Pneumonia Panel (FAPP) is a rapid test that detects various bacteria, viruses, and resistance genes related to hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in ICU patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
  • A study compared FAPP's diagnostic performance against traditional methods by analyzing samples from 100 ICU patients, revealing a significant number of discordant results where FAPP identified additional bacteria not found by conventional testing.
  • FAPP demonstrated improved positivity rates and detection of coinfections, suggesting it could help clinicians make quicker and better-informed treatment decisions for patients with HAP.
