Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition (CPPD), commonly known as pseudogout, is an inflammatory arthropathy primarily affecting the knee, wrist, hip, and shoulder joints. However, it can occasionally deposit in various structures surrounding the spinal column, including the facet joints, ligamentum flavum, bursae, and intervertebral discs. Such occurrences are typically asymptomatic or associated with mild neck pain.

Surgical strategies for spinal infections: A narrative review.

The successful operative management of spinal infections necessitates a thoughtful approach. Ideal treatment combines the universal goals of any spine operation, which are decompression of the neural elements and stabilization of instability, with source control and eradication of infection. Patients And Methods: Retrospective study of subjects undergoing CXR in various clinical settings. Computed tomography obtained within 24 hours of the CXR was used to volumetrically quantify pleural effusions (PEfs) and pneumothoraxes (Ptxs).

Temperate regions are predicted to be at greatest risk of increasing fire activity due to climate change, where fires can seriously impact important ecosystems for biodiversity and carbon storage, such as peatlands and forests.

The anthracyclines are a family of natural products isolated from soil bacteria with over 2000 chemical representatives. Since their discovery seventy years ago by Waksman and co-workers, anthracyclines have become one of the best-characterized anticancer chemotherapies in clinical use. The anthracyclines exhibit broad-spectrum antineoplastic activity for the treatment of a variety of solid and liquid tumors, however, their clinical use is limited by their dose-limiting cardiotoxicity.

Pastoral systems are the dominant livestock production system in arid and semiarid regions of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). They are often the only form of agriculture that can be practiced due to unfavorable climate and soil fertility levels that prevent crop cultivation. Pastoralism can have negative impacts on the environment, including land degradation, greenhouse gas emissions and other gases to the atmosphere, soil erosion, water pollution and biodiversity loss.

Introduction: Research and scholarship are core elements of the academic mission. Yet fulfilling institutional and accreditation requirements for scholarly activity can be challenging, particularly for teaching-intensive institutions. This paper describes strategies for employing a teacher-scholar model to stimulate and sustain scholarly activity.

Metabolomic biomarkers are associated with mortality in patients with cirrhosis caused by primary biliary cholangitis or primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Aim: To assess the ability of signature metabolites alone, or in combination with the model for end-stage liver disease-Na (MELD-Na) score to predict mortality in patients with cirrhosis caused by primary biliary cholangitis or primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Materials & Methods: Plasma metabolites were detected using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry in 39 patients with cirrhosis caused by primary biliary cholangitis or primary sclerosing cholangitis. Mortality was predicted using Cox proportional hazards regression and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analyses.

Etoposide and etoposide phosphate hypersensitivity in children: Incidence, risk factors, and prevention strategies.

Introduction: Etoposide is critical in treating pediatric cancers, although hypersensitivity can be severe and treatment-limiting. Reported rates of hypersensitivity range from 2% to 51%. Hypersensitivity data for etoposide phosphate, a newer product, are lacking.

Spatial assessment of pesticide leaching risk to groundwater: sub-national decision making and model output aggregation.

Background: This study compares standard regulatory methodology (fixed scenarios and models) to spatial modelling at a 1 km landscape resolution for the evaluation of predicted environmental concentrations of pesticides in groundwater. The use of spatial modelling in the decision-making processes is discussed and three options for the sub-national evaluation and restriction of substances based on spatial environmental fate modelling are examined. Wheat and sugar beet are tested with two modified FOCUS substances (A and D) in the PEARL and GeoPEARL models.

Studying the reproductive ecology of aggregate broadcast spawning fishes is difficult because it generally is not feasible to sample all potential parents and unambiguously assign their offspring. We used molecular-based parentage analysis to gain insights into the reproductive ecology of the endangered Bonytail, and to evaluate whether protected off-channel habitats could be used as an alternative to hatchery production. By genotyping adults and offspring stocked (n = 4130) into two experimental backwaters across three years, we determined that most adults (82-97%) contributed to progeny production across years and backwaters, with one exception.
