Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have successfully applied chemical species tomography (CST) to image the exhaust plume of gas turbines used in commercial aircraft, focusing on a specific near-infrared absorbing species.
  • The study employs advanced tunable diode laser spectroscopy to measure absorption spectra, capturing data across various thrust levels and utilizing multiple data inversion techniques for image reconstruction.
  • Notably, the images reveal a consistent ring structure of high concentration in the exhaust, indicating promising applications for CST in advancing turbine combustion, engine development, and fuel research.

We consider the inverse problem of concentration imaging in optical absorption tomography with limited data sets. The measurement setup involves simultaneous acquisition of near-infrared wavelength-modulated spectroscopic measurements from a small number of pencil beams equally distributed among six projection angles surrounding the plume. We develop an approach for image reconstruction that involves constraining the value of the image to the conventional concentration bounds and a projection into low-dimensional subspaces to reduce the degrees of freedom in the inverse problem.

TiO(2) colloidal nanoparticles and nanocrystals are prepared by hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide employing a surfactant-free synthetic hydrothermal method. The synthesized samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), HRTEM and FTIR. The XRD study confirms that the size of the colloidal nanoparticle is around 4 nm which the HRTEM analysis indicates the sizes of the colloidal nanoparticles are in the range of 2.
