Many cancers harbor oncogenic mutations of KRAS. Effectors mediating cancer progression, invasion, and metastasis in KRAS-mutated cancers are only incompletely understood. Here we identify cancer cell-expressed murine TRAIL-R, whose main function ascribed so far has been the induction of apoptosis as a crucial mediator of KRAS-driven cancer progression, invasion, and metastasis and in vivo Rac-1 activation.

Routine outcome measures in Germany.

The German healthcare system offers comprehensive coverage for people with mental illness including inpatient, day hospital and outpatient services. These services are primarily financed through the statutory health and pension insurances. According to legal regulations, providers are required to base their services on current scientific evidence and to continuously assure the quality of their services.

A German survey of the abdominal transplantation surgical work force.

This manuscript reports the results of a nationwide survey of transplant surgeons in Germany, including the demographics, training, position, individual case loads, center volumes, program structure, professional practice, grade of specialization, workload, work hours, salary, and career expectations. We contacted all 32 German transplant centers that perform liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. Surgeons engaged in transplantation were asked to reply to the survey.

Course of health care costs before and after psychiatric inpatient treatment: patient-reported vs. administrative records.

Background: There is limited evidence on the course of health service costs before and after psychiatric inpatient treatment, which might also be affected by source of cost data. Thus, this study examines: i) differences in health care costs before and after psychiatric inpatient treatment, ii) whether these differences vary by source of cost-data (self-report vs. administrative), and iii) predictors of cost differences over time.

Long-term Comparative Effectiveness of Telemedicine in Providing Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Examinations: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Minimal information exists regarding the long-term comparative effectiveness of telemedicine to provide diabetic retinopathy screening examinations.

Objective: To compare telemedicine to traditional eye examinations in their ability to provide diabetic retinopathy screening examinations.

Design, Setting, And Participants: From August 1, 2006, through September 31, 2009, 567 participants with diabetes were randomized and followed up to 5 years of follow-up (last date of patient follow-up occurred on August 6, 2012) as part of a multicenter randomized clinical trial with an intent to treat analysis.

Recent studies shed light on how these anamniotes activate progenitor cells, generate the required cell types, and functionally integrate these into a complex environment. Some developmental signals and mechanisms are recapitulated during neuronal regeneration, whereas others are unique to the regeneration process.

Mitochondria have to import the vast majority of their proteins, which are synthesized as precursors on cytosolic ribosomes. The translocase of the outer membrane (TOM complex) forms the general entry gate for the precursor proteins, which are subsequently sorted by protein machineries into the mitochondrial subcompartments: the outer and inner membrane, the intermembrane space and the mitochondrial matrix. The transport across and into the inner membrane is driven by the membrane potential, which is generated by the respiratory chain.

Maternal glucose levels during pregnancy impact the developing fetus, affecting metabolic health both early and later on in life. Both genetic and environmental factors influence maternal metabolism, but little is known about the genetic mechanisms that alter glucose metabolism during pregnancy. Here, we report that haplotypes previously associated with gestational hyperglycaemia in the third trimester disrupt regulatory element activity and reduce expression of the nearby HKDC1 gene.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most fatal human tumors, with radical surgical resection as the only curative treatment option. However, resection is only possible in a small fraction of patients, and about 80% of the patients develop recurrencies. PDAC development is facilitated by the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6), which acts via classic and trans-signaling.

Endocrine activity of alternatives to BPA found in thermal paper in Switzerland.

Alternatives to bisphenol A (BPA) are more and more used in thermal paper receipts. To get an overview of the situation in Switzerland, 124 thermal paper receipts were collected and analyzed. Whereas BPA was detected in most samples (n=100), some alternatives, namely bisphenol S (BPS), Pergafast® 201 and D-8 have been found in 4, 11 and 9 samples respectively.

Personal decision-making processes for living related liver transplantation in children.

Living related liver transplantation (LRLT) is a valuable transplant option for children with end-stage liver disease who face long waiting times on regular waiting lists. The subjection of a healthy adult to a potentially life-threatening operation can raise issues of freedom of choice, fear, and family conflict for the potential donors. We examined attitudes, fears, and influencing factors in the decision-making process for living liver donation for children in order to identify factors to improve support for living liver donors in the future.

The majority of preproteins destined for mitochondria carry N-terminal presequences. The presequence translocase of the inner mitochondrial membrane (TIM23 complex) plays a central role in protein sorting. Preproteins are either translocated through the TIM23 complex into the matrix or are laterally released into the inner membrane.

ARHGAP18: an endogenous inhibitor of angiogenesis, limiting tip formation and stabilizing junctions.

The formation of the vascular network requires a tightly controlled balance of pro-angiogenic and stabilizing signals. Perturbation of this balance can result in dysregulated blood vessel morphogenesis and drive pathologies including cancer. Here, we have identified a novel gene, ARHGAP18, as an endogenous negative regulator of angiogenesis, limiting pro-angiogenic signaling and promoting vascular stability.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome or catatonia? Trying to solve the catatonic dilemma.

Combined evaluation of a panel of protein and miRNA serum-exosome biomarkers for pancreatic cancer diagnosis increases sensitivity and specificity.

Late diagnosis contributes to pancreatic cancer (PaCa) dismal prognosis, urging for reliable, early detection. Serum-exosome protein and/or miRNA markers might be suitable candidates, which we controlled for patients with PaCa. Protein markers were selected according to expression in exosomes of PaCa cell line culture supernatants, but not healthy donors' serum-exosomes.

S3 guideline on psychosocial therapies in severe mental illness: evidence and recommendations.

The burden of severe and persistent mental illness is high. Beside somatic treatment and psychotherapeutic interventions, treatment options for patients with severe mental illness also include psychosocial interventions. This paper summarizes the results of a number of systematic literature searches on psychosocial interventions for people with severe mental illness.

More than 80 years ago, Pio Del Rio-Hortega recognized that one of the "main controversial points in regard to the microglia" is "whether it belongs to the reticulo-endothelial system [i.e. monocytes and macrophages] and possesses the ordinary characteristics of this system or has a more specialized function.

Integrins αvβ3 and αvβ5 as prognostic, diagnostic, and therapeutic targets in gastric cancer.

Background: We investigated the expression of two αv integrins, αvβ3 and αvβ5, in gastric cancer (GC) by testing the following hypotheses: that these molecules are expressed in GC; that they are implicated in GC biology; that they help to distinguish between the two major histological subtypes of GC, according to Laurén; and that they are prognostically relevant.

Methods: Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 482 GC samples were stained immunohistochemically using rabbit monoclonal antibodies directed against αvβ3 (EM22703) and αvβ5 (EM09902). Immunostaining of tumor, stroma, and endothelial cells was evaluated separately by the quantity and intensity, generating an immunoreactivity score.

Assembly of β-barrel proteins in the mitochondrial outer membrane.

Mitochondria evolved through endosymbiosis of a Gram-negative progenitor with a host cell to generate eukaryotes. Therefore, the outer membrane of mitochondria and Gram-negative bacteria contain pore proteins with β-barrel topology. After synthesis in the cytosol, β-barrel precursor proteins are first transported into the mitochondrial intermembrane space.

Where are patients who have co-occurring mental and physical diseases located?

Background: Patients with a psychiatric illness have a higher prevalence of physical diseases and thus a higher morbidity and mortality.

Aim: The main aim was to investigate where patients with co-occurring physical diseases and mental disorders (psychotic spectrum or mood) in the health and social service system are identified most frequently before admission into psychiatry. The second aim was to compare the differences in the treatment routes taken by the patients before entry into psychiatric services in all the participating countries (Denmark, Germany, Japan, Nigeria and Switzerland).
