The radioisotopes of Sc and Sc are promising in the field of theranostics for their role as β emitters in theranostic pairs with Sc. Production of these isotopes through various nuclear reactions using either cyclotrons or linear accelerators is of particular interest and previous studies have provided results using accelerated beams of protons, deuterons, and alpha particles. A novel production technique, using an ion source cathode packed with natural calcium fluoride material and irradiated with a He beam, was tested at the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame in order to initially study the production of Ca.

20 years of choices: a fight for increased funding for graduate students.

After 20 years of stagnation, federal scholarships have finally been increased within the new budget of the Canadian government. Tuition fees, inflation, and costs of living kept rising, which has resulted a rising number of graduate students in the life sciences living below poverty line, despite working far more than 40 h a week on science research in Canada. This does not only negatively affect the students research projects and thus science and innovation in Canada, but also their downstream decisions on whether to continue a research career in Canada and what jobs and economic endeavors to pursue.

Leveraging Bluetooth low-energy technology to improve contact tracing among healthcare personnel in hospital setting during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

To improve contact tracing for healthcare workers, we built and configured a Bluetooth low-energy system. We predicted close contacts with great accuracy and provided an additional contact yield of 14.8%.

Spatial Epidemiologic Analysis and Risk Factors for Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Infections, Missouri, USA, 2008-2019.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections are caused by environmental exposure. We describe spatial distribution of NTM infections and associations with sociodemographic factors and flooding in Missouri, USA. Our retrospective analysis of mycobacterial cultures reported to the Missouri Department of Health and Social Services surveillance system during January 1, 2008-December 31, 2019, detected geographic clusters of infection.

Background: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous in the environment and an increasingly frequent cause of opportunistic infections. Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) is one of the major NTM lung pathogens that disproportionately colonize and infect the lungs of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). MABC infection can persist for years, and antimicrobial treatment is frequently ineffective.

Analysis of financial challenges faced by graduate students in Canada.

Graduate students are vital to the creation of research and innovation in Canada. The National Graduate Student Finance Survey was launched in 2021 by the Ottawa Science Policy Network to investigate the financial realities of Canadian graduate students. Closing in April 2022, the survey received 1305 responses from graduate students representing various geographical locations, years of study, fields of education, and demographic backgrounds.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is an infectious disease that occurs only in humans with a tropism that is narrowly restricted to the outermost epidermal layer of the skin. Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) is the causative agent of MC which produces skin lesions that can persist for months to several years. MCV is efficiently transmitted by direct physical contact or by indirect contact with fomites.

Neurodegenerative diseases are among the main causes of death in the United States, leading to irreversible disintegration of neurons. Despite intense international research efforts, cellular mechanisms that initiate neurodegeneration remain elusive, thus inhibiting the development of effective preventative and early onset medical treatment. To identify underlying cellular mechanisms that initiate neuron degeneration, it is critical to identify histological and cellular hallmarks that can be linked to underlying biochemical processes.

Impact of risk-based sexually transmitted infection screening in the emergency department.

Objectives: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose a significant health burden in adolescents. Many adolescents receiving care in the emergency department (ED) are in need of testing, regardless of their chief complaint. Our objective was to determine whether an electronic, risk-based STI screening program in our ED was associated with an increase in STI testing among at-risk adolescents.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria, including those in the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), constitute an increasingly urgent threat to global public health. Ubiquitous in soil and water worldwide, MAC members cause a diverse array of infections in humans and animals that are often multidrug resistant, intractable, and deadly. MAC lung disease is of particular concern and is now more prevalent than tuberculosis in many countries, including the United States.

Rapid and inexpensive preparation of genome-wide nucleosome footprints from model and non-model organisms.

MNase-seq (micrococcal nuclease sequencing) is used to map nucleosome positions in eukaryotic genomes to study the relationship between chromatin structure and DNA-dependent processes. Current protocols require at least two days to isolate nucleosome-protected DNA fragments. We have developed a streamlined protocol for and other fungi which takes only three hours.

Background: Health care administrative database research frequently uses standard medical codes to identify diagnoses or procedures. The aim of this review was to establish the diagnostic accuracy of codes used in administrative data research to identify nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease, including lung disease (NTMLD).

Methods: We searched Ovid Medline, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.

Eukaryotic genomes are organized dynamically through the repositioning of nucleosomes. Isw2 is an enzyme that has been previously defined as a genome-wide, nonspecific nucleosome spacing factor. Here, we show that Isw2 instead acts as an obligately targeted nucleosome remodeler in vivo through physical interactions with sequence-specific factors.

Outcomes of Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy With Ceftriaxone for Methicillin-Susceptible Bloodstream Infections-A Single-Center Observational Study.

Background: bloodstream infections (BSIs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Ceftriaxone is convenient for outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), but data for this indication are limited.

Methods: Adult patients with methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) BSI discharged on OPAT with cefazolin, oxacillin, or ceftriaxone for at least 7 days were included.

FoodKnight: A mobile educational game and analyses of obesity awareness in children.

One of the main contributing factors to child obesity is the absence of education and knowledge children have towards certain foods when they are making food choices. In most cases, children will pick energy-dense food over foods with more nutritional value and do not understand the consequences of their decisions. Our proposed solution to help overcome this problem is an educational gaming application called FoodKnight.

Objective: Audio-enhanced computer-assisted self-interviews (ACASIs) are useful adjuncts for clinical care but are rarely integrated into the electronic health record (EHR). We created a flexible framework for integrating an ACASIs with clinical decision support (CDS) into the EHR. We used this program to identify adolescents at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the emergency department (ED).

Therapeutic efficacy of favipiravir against Bourbon virus in mice.

Bourbon virus (BRBV) is an emerging tick-borne RNA virus in the orthomyxoviridae family that was discovered in 2014. Although fatal human cases of BRBV have been described, little is known about its pathogenesis, and no antiviral therapies or vaccines exist. We obtained serum from a fatal case in 2017 and successfully recovered the second human infectious isolate of BRBV.
