Although preoperative risk assessment for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been evaluated with multiple predictive models, none have incorporated a low level of cardiorespiratory fitness, which represents one of the strongest predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in subjects with and without heart disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate preoperative cardiorespiratory fitness, expressed as METs (1 MET = 3.5 ml O2/kg/min), and short-term morbidity and mortality after CABG.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a recognized risk multiplier for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with CVD events representing the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with CKD. The nature of CKD as a risk state relates both to the nature of CKD and the antecedent development of CVD. In addition, patients with CKD have increased rates of multiple conventional cardiac risk factors.

Glucagon-expressing retinal amacrine cells have been implicated in regulating postnatal ocular growth. Furthermore, experimentally accelerated rates of ocular growth increase the number of neurons added to the peripheral edge of the retina. Accordingly, we assayed whether glucagon-expressing neurons within the retina regulate the proliferation of progenitors in the circumferential marginal zone (CMZ) of the postnatal chicken eye.
