In this article, we present the first demonstration of a distance-based paper analytical device (dPAD) for uric acid quantification in human urine samples with instrument-free readout and user-friendliness for the rapid diagnosis and prognosis of various related diseases. By employing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a peroxidase-like nanozyme, our proposed technique eliminates the utilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), making the device cost-effective and stable. In our dPAD, uric acid in the sample is oxidized by the uricase enzyme and subsequently catalysed with AuNPs in the sample zone, generating hydroxyl radicals (˙OH).

A straightforward distance-based paper analytical device (dPAD) was developed for monitoring sarcosine levels in human samples for the rapid diagnosis and prognosis of prostate cancer and related symptoms. This assay eliminates the need for the expensive horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme by utilizing carbon nanodots (CDs) as a peroxidase-like nanozyme. The proposed dPAD sensor consists of a sample zone pre-deposited with sarcosine oxidase (SOx) and CDs, and a detection zone containing 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB).

Dengue disease is a viral infection that has been widespread in tropical regions, such as Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America. A worldwide effort has been made over a few decades to halt the spread of the disease and reduce fatalities. Lateral flow assay (LFA), a paper-based technology, is used for dengue virus detection and identification because of its simplicity, low cost and fast response.

Pterygium is a progressive disease of the human eye arising from sub-conjunctival tissue and extending onto the cornea. Due to its invasive growth, pterygium can reach the pupil compromising visual function. Currently available medical treatments have limited success in suppressing efficiently the disease.

Lipids are a major source of energy for most tissues, and lipid uptake and storage is therefore crucial for energy homeostasis. So far, quantification of lipid uptake has primarily relied on radioactive isotope labeling, exposing human subjects or experimental animals to ionizing radiation. Here, we describe the quantification of uptake of chylomicrons, the primary carriers of dietary lipids, in metabolically active tissues using magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS).

Antibacterial polymer nanocomposite fibre meshes containing graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were successfully prepared by pressurised gyration. The morphological and chemical composition of the resulting fibre meshes were determined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Raman mapping and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). SEM showed the fibres to have an average diameter increasing from ~1-4 µm as the GO loading increased.
