This study reports the facile synthesis of highly photoactive TiO@C core@shell nanocomposites through a single alkoxide precursor. TiO and carbon-based hybrid nanomaterials are popular photocatalysts owing to their abundance, low toxicity, and high stability, making them strong candidates for practical solar water-treatment applications. The ultrasound drug delivery field is actively designing new agents that would obviate the problems of just using microbubbles for drug delivery. Microbubbles have very short circulation time (minutes), low payload and large size (2-10μm), all of these aspects are not ideal for systemic drug delivery. However, microbubble carriers provide excellent image contrast and their use for image guidance can be exploited.

Acoustic interrogation and optical visualization of ultrasound contrast agents within microcapsules.

The effectiveness of localized drug delivery as a treatment for breast cancer requires sufficiently high therapeutic dose, as well as an ability to image the drug for proper spatial targeting. To balance treatment potential and imaging capabilities, we have begun to design a novel drug reservoir using microcapsules that are large in size (> 30 µm) but functionalized with microbubbles or ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs). We term these carriers as 'Acoustically Sensitive Microcapsules' (ASMs).

Effect of therapeutic ultrasound on acoustically sensitive microcapsules.

In the area of therapeutic ultrasound activated drug delivery, difficulties exist in designing a carrier that responds to ultrasound for triggering and imaging but also provides adequate treatment potential. In this paper, we report on a novel acoustically sensitive microcapsule reservoir that can be activated with therapeutic ultrasound for payload release and can be potentially tracked using imaging. It is being designed for increased longevity and is not planned for the circulation.

Microwave assisted synthesis and characterization of barium titanate nanoparticles for multi layered ceramic capacitor applications.

Barium titanate is a common ferroelectric electro-ceramic material having high dielectric constant, with photorefractive effect and piezoelectric properties. In this research work, nano-scale barium titanate powders were synthesized by microwave assisted mechano-chemical route. Suitable precursors were ball milled for 20 hours.

Case-case genome-wide association analysis shows markers differentially associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and implicates calcium channel genes.

Objective: There are theoretical reasons why comparing marker allele frequencies between cases of different diseases, rather than with controls, may offer benefits. The samples may be better matched, especially for background risk factors common to both diseases. Genetic loci may also be detected which influence which of the two diseases occurs if common risk factors are present.

A recent study published by our group implicated the bromodomain containing protein 1 (BRD1) gene located at chromosome 22q13.33 with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar affective disorder (BPD) susceptibility and provided evidence suggesting a possible role for BRD1 in neurodevelopment. The present study reports an association analysis of BRD1 and the neighboring gene ZBED4 using a Caucasian case-control sample from Denmark and England (UK/DK sample: 490 patients with BPD, 527 patients with SZ, and 601 control individuals), and genotypes obtained from a BPD genome wide association (GWA) study of an overlapping English sample comprising 506 patients with BPD and 510 control individuals (UCL sample).

In this paper we report a statistically significant replication of the PCM1 association in a large Scottish case-control sample from Aberdeen. Resequencing of the genomic DNA from research volunteers who had inherited haplotypes associated with schizophrenia showed a threonine to isoleucine missense mutation in exon 24 which was likely to change the structure and function of PCM1 (rs370429).
