Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional deficiency in pregnant women and affects the expression of the iron transport protein DMT1 in the placenta.
A study involving 200 pregnant women found that 58.8% had anemia, with higher DMT1 expression levels in the placentas of anemic mothers compared to nonanemic ones.
The results indicate that severe maternal anemia leads to increased DMT1 expression, which helps regulate iron transport to the developing fetus.
