Misuse and overuse of antibiotics in aquaculture has proven to be an unsustainable practice leading to increased bacterial resistance. An alternative strategy involves the inclusion of immunostimulants in fish diets, especially fungal and herbal compounds already authorized for human consumption, hence without environmental or public health concerns. In this study, we used a holistic and cross-disciplinary pipeline to assess the immunostimulatory properties of two fungi: Trametes versicolor and Ganoderma lucidum; one herbal supplement, capsaicin in the form of Espelette pepper (Capsicum annuum), and a combination of these fungal and herbal additives on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Here we show that Bacillus pumilus ICVB403 recently isolated from copepod eggs is able to produce, after 48-72 h of growth in Landy medium, extracellular inhibitory compounds, which are active against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300, MRSA-S1, Staphylococcus epidermidis 11EMB, Staphylococcus warneri 27EMB, and Staphylococcus hominis 13EMB. This study aimed to identify a protein marker that can differentiate between fresh skinless and frozen-thawed sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fillets using the two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE) technique. Distinct gel patterns, due to proteins with low molecular weight and low isoelectric points, distinguished fresh fillets from frozen-thawed ones. A highly branched (1 → 3,1 → 6)-β-D-glucan was isolated from the microalga Isochrysis galbana Parke (Isochrysidales, Haptophyta). The polysaccharide structure was analyzed by methylation and Smith degradation, as well as by ESI and MALDI TOF mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. The glucan was shown to contain a (1 → 6)-linked backbone, where every residue is substituted at position 3 by Glc, which in turn may be substituted at C-6 by a single Glc or by rather short (up to tetrasaccharide) oligosaccharide chains.

ABSTRACT Analysis of the genetic locus encompassing a cell wall polysaccharide (CWPS) biosynthesis operon of eight strains of Lactococcus lactis, identified as belonging to the same CWPS type C genotype, revealed the presence of a variable region among the strains examined. The results allowed the identification of five subgroups of the C type named subtypes C1 to C5. This variable region contains genes encoding glycosyltransferases that display low or no sequence homology between the subgroups.
