The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics.

Background: Quantification of pulmonary edema in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) by chest computed tomography (CT) scan has not been validated in routine diagnostics due to its complexity and time-consuming nature. Therefore, the single-indicator transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) technique to measure extravascular lung water (EVLW) has been used in the clinical setting. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have now enabled CT images of inhomogeneous lungs to be segmented automatically by an intensive care physician with no prior radiology training within a relatively short time.

Article Synopsis
  • Trauma and infections trigger emergency granulopoiesis, which leads to an increase of immature granulocytes in the blood during severe conditions like sepsis, but their effectiveness as biomarkers is limited due to mixed disease severity responses.
  • * A study was conducted comparing sepsis patients to those with SIRS, using techniques like flow cytometry and gene expression assays to analyze granulocyte populations and their developmental stages.
  • * Results showed that immature granulocyte precursor counts were higher in sepsis but didn't correlate with disease severity, and that low-density granulocytes had a significantly greater number of precursors compared to high-density granulocytes.

Article Synopsis
  • Microplastics (MPs) are generated by human activities and travel from rivers to the ocean, with biofilms in aquatic ecosystems potentially influencing their distribution and ingestion by organisms.
  • A study in the River Rhine showed that biofilms collected from clay tiles contained significantly higher amounts of MPs compared to the surrounding water, with a majority of these particles being less than 50 micrometers.
  • Laboratory findings demonstrated that biofilm-covered tiles captured 6-12 times more MPs, and experiments confirmed that the ciliate Stentor coeruleus ingests these particles, indicating their potential impact on aquatic life and particle transport models.

The seminal work of Wennberg and Gittelsohn in 1973 emphasised the importance of health information for informed decision-making. This led to the creation of the Dartmouth Health Atlas in 1996, which has become an important resource for monitoring health services in the USA. The Dartmouth Health Atlas research revealed the existence of variation in health care without benefit to patients, and the dependence of health care use on local resource supply.

Estimates suggest that the amount of plastic litter discarded in the ocean is several times greater than what remains floating at the sea surface, raising questions about the fate of this marine debris. Fouling-induced sinking of plastic litter is one of the proposed mechanisms responsible for this mass difference. While some of this 'missing' plastic mass may be explained by the effects of fouling, it has also been hypothesized that sinking litter may return to the surface after benthic organisms consume the biofouling.

Seabirds have become biovectors of plastic pollutants between marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and transport of plastics to their nesting sites becomes relevant due to increasing levels of pollution. To determine the pathways by which plastic reaches their colonies, we analysed the abundance of plastics at the nesting sites of five seabird species (Humboldt penguin Spheniscus humboldti, Peruvian booby Sula variegata, kelp gull Larus dominicanus, grey gull Leucophaeus modestus, Markham's storm-petrel Hydrobates markhami) nesting in northern Chile. Seabirds were primarily grouped according to their nesting behaviour, but two species foraging in contrasting habitats (kelp gull and Markham's storm-petrel) were also compared directly.
